tolerance is a contract not a charity

Tolerance is a social contract, not a moral precept. If you break the contract you are no longer protected by it.

Unlimited tolerance must lead to the disappearance of tolerance. If we extend unlimited tolerance even to those who are intolerant, if we are not prepared to defend a tolerant society against the onslaught of the intolerant, then the tolerant will be destroyed, and tolerance with them.

The only way to ensure tolerance is not to tolerate intolerance. How is that so hard to understand?

[-] Malgas@beehaw.org 6 points 21 hours ago

Further, tolerance is a social contract. The intolerant choose to violate it, so they don't get to claim its protections.

No. Tolerance is a social contract that these shitheads rejected, and therefore deserve none.

So by "no" you mean "yes"?

...a truly tolerant society must retain the right to deny tolerance to those who promote intolerance. [...] if intolerant ideologies are allowed unchecked expression, they could exploit open society values to erode or destroy tolerance itself through authoritarian or oppressive practices.

By "No" I mean that it's not a paradox

[-] egrets@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Fair, but we're into semantics at this point; there's no benefit to anyone in debating that. What you're describing is still an approach to what's known as the Paradox of Tolerance.

[-] Schmoo@slrpnk.net 4 points 17 hours ago

When you're talking about philosophical concepts, semantics matter. Calling the concept a paradox carries the implication that it is irresolvable, and most people aren't going to engage with the topic beyond the surface-level implications. See the countless slop content on youtube that talks about the "paradox of tolerance" in this very shallow way.

Best GIF I've seen in this century.

Many "Nazis" can change their minds from just being exposed to a diverse group of people, especially in childhood. We should definitely try that first, before antagonising them and pushing them even more into their harmful viewpoints, and escalating the cycle of violence.

Okay well you go and hang out with them to convert them, I'll personally continue to remove them on sight. I think you'll discover many Nazis and their kin aren't simply misguided sheep.

Maybe also don’t be so rash with labeling everyone further right from you a Nazi or fascist.

This issue goes all the way back to German communists branding the social democrats as social fascists in Weimar Germany.
