this would work better I think. It's not as fancy, but it gives a better idea I think.

For McLaren it says n=63, but pictured on the graphic is 85 pitstops, of which 22 are painted orange. 22/63 is the figure used for the percentage though.

It's mildly annoying that they didn't use the same number of pitstops for all four

I assume they have done different amounts though, so how would you split it? I assume that the conditions at different races would effect the times.

Couldn't help myself and quickly created another version in excel. It's not as fancy, but feel like it gives a better idea

Looks so much better!

I think it would help to use to same grid for the squares for all teams. You'd need a grid of 5 by 14, leave the not performed squares black. In that way a higher colored stack means more quick pitstops, a higher stack of grey squares means a higher amount of performed stops overall.

I'd just take the last 50

Anybody know what Merc are doing differently that is resulting in consistently slower stops? Has to be something fundamental with their approach.

They like to play things safe. This served them well when they could rely on having the fastest car, but it's starting to hurt them now I feel.

When it comes to pitstops, there are two philosophies:

A. Do them as quick as possible. For that to work, you need your parts to be manifactured a certain way so everything can be done fast.

B. Do them as safe as possible. Thats what Merc are going for, and they have optimzed their processes and parts/Tools to do perfect pitstops that are not as quick.

The thing is, even Ferrari haven't fucked up hardly ever with their faster stops this season, its no longer that faster means mistakes are a regular occurrence.

We saw in 21 that the FIA introduced rule changes around pit stops to make them slower, and for a time this reduced the delta Merc had to the other teams but its grown again, partly as Merc seem to have gotten slower.

For a team that often exudes "we have our shit together", Merc pit stops are just not where most everyone else is. Wonder why?

[-] BURN@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

They don’t care to try to be faster. They’ve said they’d rather be a tiny bit slower than their competitors rather than just as fast and making mistakes.

Considering that most of the time RB doesn’t make any more mistakes than them it might just be a BS excuse

[-] frank@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 year ago

Interesting! Not doubting you, but if you have a source handy I'd love to see it. It sounds a little BS since again, RBR doesn't often make mistakes and does it faster

Apparently it comes from a James Vowels debrief after one of the 2022 races. I don’t have a specific source since I can’t go listen to audio right now.

Cool! I'll hunt a little. Be interested to see if he took that mentality to Williams

Yikes Mercedes.

Tito isn't gonna like that
