Not the same use case at all, I think, even though some communities were indeed misusing discord for their needs
About 70% of my server list would have been better as a message board.
This is I think what a lot of people aren't realizing. Discord was being used for a lot of stuff that really should have been handled differently.
The only reason it was picked was because Discord was free, easy to setup, and everyone used it.
All the commercialized platforms are going to continue enshittifying, anyone capable of independent thought is going to abandon ship, the fediverse is going to grow, and there will be two vastly different internets: the mainstream, corporate, algorithmically-curated, profit-driven toxic slopfests; and the decentralized, independent platforms that aren't motivated by profit where everyone sane goes instead.
To the people trapped in the former, it'll be all they know and they'll think it's representative of the world and the web. It'll be like the matrix. And it'll be hostile to anyone who leaves the matrix, especially when they go back over bringing a lifeline to anyone willing to abandon those platforms.
Same here. I even think I never used the Discord audio chat excepts with my friends. All the other activity was text-based.
I remember when my opinion started souring about Discord was when someone mentioned the platform is the death of forums. It's been quite a few years now, but that sure stuck to my mind. Glad to see forums regaining space, specially publicly-browsable ones. =)
Which is why Discord should die. It made the Internet much less accessible.
I think it serves part of the role of a Discord server, but ultimately it doesn't really serve as a chat server or place for people to share screens etc.
It is one piece of the puzzle but it alone won't work for the majority of people's needs who are migrating a Discord community.
90% of my server list would function better as a forum. Those functions aren't part of the use at all. Discord is misused by a ton of communities.
You are completely out of touch with the needs of literally everyone whose needs are slightly different than yours.
Why does that matter?
His point is valid all the same.
The thousands of similar posts I've seen across the Internet for years, including all over the fediverse almost every time Discord is even mentioned saying exactly the same lead me to believe that it's a pretty widely felt belief. It's almost as bad as the linux fanboys constantly proselytizing whenever Windows is mentioned.
I think you might be the one that is out of touch with reality if you've managed to completely missing almost every previous discord debate on the comments of articles. You might want to actually look around for a bit instead of clearly assuming you are the correct one and trying to claim others don't know.
PieFed is a reddit clone.
Discord communities need a discord clone. It's not rocket science.
Say matrix and I'd have agreed it's good enough for a lot of people's needs... But so is IRC. And that's never been good enough to migrate Discord users.
The only way to kill Discord is a Discord clone like fosscord/Spacebar or some of the other similar projects.
You don't replace Twitter with reddit and you don't replace Discord with it either. That clearly, CLEARLY has not met the majority of users needs or we wouldn't be having this conversation.
I'm just saying that a lot of Discord communities would function better with a different structure. That they are on Discord only because it's ubiquitous and free, not because it's the best solution.
Not sure why you seem to want to insist that is somehow not even a possibility.
No, I totally agree with that part. I wish people would move. I wish it was possible just to convince them to use a slightly different model of things. I'm absolutely disgusted in people's inability to adapt or adjust to even the slightest changes. I'm definitely not advocating for them.
But PieFed is really a reddit model. People using Discord for chat and that type of more instant communication you really need both PieFed and Matrix.
Sorry if you're the one I claimed was out of touch, I shouldn't talk to people I don't know like that. Hope I made my case.

"Besides forum-equivalent functionality, PieFed also offers ... Question and answers similar to StackOverflow where an answer can be visually distinguished as an answer, and the original question marked as solved."

Funny, I was just recently bemoaning the lack of a federated Q&A and suggesting adding ActivityPub support to Apache Answers;
Forums are functionally much better than Discord, no question there, but what drew people to Discord and keeps them there is the chat affordances. You don't feel like you're participating in an agora, you just send stuff. There's much less pressure doing that.
Fortunately it is posible to combine both a forum architecture and a chat interface: this is what Zulip does and is to me the best replacement. Its major shortcoming is that it isn't federated but alternative clients should take inspiration from it
It's a compromise, but I'll take the Zulip approach compared to Matrix everyday.
It feels better to be able to quickly switch between Zulip accounts on every app compared to Element X still not supporting multi account, Fluffychat doing it but not supporting the latest version of the call features, etc.
Shouldn't PieFed/Lemmy be an alternative to Reddit, though?

Welcome!
Can you imagine, years ago how the internet was before? We know Facebook, Twitter, Tiktok, Youtube. We knew blogger, Tumblr, Skyrock... and long before, it was the forum era as phpBB..and mail-lists.
And now with ActivityPub, we are reshaping the web, and achieving much more with lots of freedom. So thank you all, and welcome 🤟😁
