The author is talking about a real problem but doesn't actually address the core of it, which is that there needs to be some way of teaching people to write without using AI. I don't see any way of doing it except via in-person tests.

my suggestion is to work on the things AI can't, creativity, finding your own voice/style. those things AI is inherently unable to do. Just writing essays as a form of busywork is and was bullshit. essays need to challenge ideas and students need to find their own voice. in person writing is an OK way to test without AI, but that's a useless skill.
