The shame is that this option is needed. Toxic masculinity is so prevalent and infiltrates everything. Boys not raised well. Sad.

Boys not able to be raised well

They're all broken out there, you helping or just doing holier then thou shtuff for fun?

[-] curiousaur@reddthat.com 9 points 2 months ago

I have a real issue with you adding not able to be raised well. As a father of a boy. Let me tell you it's absolutely the parents. You can raise boys well.

please tell me there is no penalty to those women taking this option. It would be so easy for Uber to pull a "only $5 more" to get a ride or "5% less" to avoid a rider.

[-] ZoteTheMighty@lemmy.zip 8 points 2 months ago

It'll be harder to find rides, your wait time will go up.

[-] kibiz0r@midwest.social 12 points 2 months ago

Just to be clear: this is not about protecting people.

This is just another squeeze, wringing the next few drops of accountability out of their sector.

They’re not really employing the drivers, so they’re not responsible for vetting them. And they’re not really selling rides, so they’re not responsible for what happens during one.

So what’s next? “Oh, we told drivers to get interior cameras, we told riders to be careful, we gave them checkboxes!”

Anything at all that they can spin as a value-add to shareholders, rather than allowing for any amount of responsibility towards the well-being of people who interact with their systems.

[-] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 9 points 2 months ago

The alternative option, Uber running background checks on their drivers, was laughed out of the boardroom.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

They have bears driving Ubers now?

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Massive demand for robotaxis as they mature and spread.

[-] Triumph@fedia.io 5 points 2 months ago

Ffs can I also?

[-] endless_nameless@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

We should cut the nation in half down the middle, male side and female side. We'll have gender embassies to coordinate economic matters. Every 10 years we'll all send our most fit and fertile to meet in the gender demilitarized zone for breeding. Better yet, maybe we can establish a reproductive material trade so we never have to see each other.

[-] Viking_Hippie@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 months ago

Or, you know, just not be horrible towards each other 🤷🏻

Naive and foolish, gender segregation is the only way /s

Since you are making fun of this: Do you understand, why a woman would want this option?

[-] endless_nameless@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Honestly thought it would be obvious to everyone that this was a joke given how preposterous it was. Yes I do see why women would want this.

The joke is really just meant to be funny. But if we wanna dissect it we can. Though I feel like it should be sufficient to say the joke is about capitalism.

[-] HulkSmashBurgers@reddthat.com 1 points 2 months ago

Feels like that's where things are headed unfortunately.

[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world -2 points 2 months ago

Why did this upset you so much?

[-] endless_nameless@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

Thought it was obvious that this was a joke... I was chuckling as I typed this...

[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world -4 points 2 months ago

That’s a shit ass joke, man. Punching down is bad comedy.

[-] endless_nameless@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

Punching down? The fuck? Nah, you're the sexist one here. I view women as my equals. I can't believe I really have to spell this out but the joke is about capitalism.

[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago
[-] endless_nameless@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

It's a joke, man. Just say you don't get it and move on. It's not that serious.

[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

It’s a joke about making fun of women, or anyone who cares about women in general, for not wanting to get raped or attacked.

Just say you’re a rape culture misogynist and move on.

[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Fuck it, I’ll bite, actually, explain to me how what you said is a joke about capitalism? Spell it out for me, I’m real dumb.

[-] endless_nameless@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Alright, I'll bite too despite knowing you've already made your mind up and will interpret this in bad faith.

Lyft obviously does not give a single fuck about safety, they are a corporation in the United States. It just doesn't compute. This is very clearly a move for optics and perhaps marketing, which OP has so kindly done for them. If they gave a shit they would have a proper vetting process for their drivers instead of this. Calling this move half-assed is a too generous. This doesn't protect women from serious threats from any motivated bad actor. Sex pests will say they are a trans woman, which Lyft will never verify due to negligence and optics. Traffickers will employ women to drive for them, which is already a somewhat common practice in general.

The joke is about how capitalism creates problems in society and the pretends to solve them in ways that seem productive on the surface. In actuality, these solutions are only to enrich the system while pacifying the people it exploits, all while sowing the division capitalism thrives on. The joke is hyperbole taking this notion to the extreme.

Allow me to restate that it's a JOKE, the purpose is to be funny, and it's not that serious. It was funny to me, clearly it was funny to some others based on the votes. As with all jokes, not everyone needs to get it.

[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

I don’t see any of that in your “joke.”

Can you translate the “joke” directly in those terms? How is that what you were getting at? It’s just not translating for me.

[-] endless_nameless@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago
[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

No. I would very much like to see you dissect that joke and make of it what you are claiming. I’m not seeing it.

[-] endless_nameless@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Why would I? I already told you I know you have your mind made up and won't interpret what I say in good faith. You didn't read my last explanation so why would I explain any further?

You think I'm a sexist, I think you're an idiot and/or a troll. There's really no point continuing this "conversation" unless it's just to aimlessly vent misplaced anger in which case fuck you too buddy!

Found one of the problem ones

[-] idriss@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 months ago

In the Lyft app it even specifically mentions this feature's availability for non-binary people along with women - which I very much so appreciate
