Can I interest you in Edwardian-era shipwrecks and maritime disasters?

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Shipwrecks are never not going to be interesting

Look up Oceanliner Designs on YouTube, he will entertain you for hours on end about the topic more than I ever could!

I worked at a Toyota dealer way back, so ... yeah.

For Toyota specifically, in the mid 90s, 4Runners had headgasket problems. They were replacing them for free on a service action, even outside of warranty. What did Toyota do to change the replacement headgasket sets so they wouldn't fail at 80K miles? Nothing.

[-] moonshadow@slrpnk.net 2 points 3 weeks ago

Actually the issue you are referencing affected both 4runners and pickups 89-95 with the 3.0l V6 3VZ-FE, and the cylinder heads themselves were prone to warping. Offering to slap new gaskets in was a cop out, no change to the gaskets would have been able to correct the issue. Most second gens still on the road have either the extremely well regarded 2.4l I4 22R-E or an engine swap. The 3.4l V6 5VZ-FE is in my opinion an ideal candidate, but the Toyota UZ series V8 Chevy 4.3l V6 and Buick 3800 Series II are also popular choices

I feel like AD is in danger of being watered down by just being passionate about something. Having a passion doesn't put you on the spectrum

100%

Through a combination of diagnostic creep, laymen/casual use of psych terminology, and the odd cultural trend of label-seeking over the past 10-15 years, many diagnoses have been watered down. Autism and ADHD are probably at the forefront.

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago

not really that odd if you consider the loneliness epidemic and the death of third spaces.

I heard my Mom and my brother's baby mama talking about the possibility of my nephew being ADHD already. Baby Mama said he's too wild and exploratory. She thinks it's probably ADHD. He's nine months old.

[-] The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, it's extremely common. Pair that motivated sentiment with a kid who's in the diagnosable age range (or an adult), and a diagnosis is almost guaranteed.

Most mental health diagnoses are dependent on subjective reporting of symptoms and history, so if someone - or their parent - want the label or have otherwise already convinced themselves that it's true, their self-reported history is going to be colored by that, and most clinicians are going to err on the side of the treatment that the client wants.

Having an autistic friend is no different than listening to a podcast

While others believe it is like watching a niche YouTuber. Thank you for joining us in our weekly round table "Are They Autistic?" This week we will be discussing Todd, he's sensitive to light, but doesn't like trains.

Unfair generalization… I never organize my thoughts or have funny anecdotes for my info dumps 🥲

[-] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

My son is 9 and knows more about Toyotas (and other JDM cars) than any 9 y.o. should know. Probably more than most Japanese car dealers would know.
Should I have him tested for the ‘tism?

I see your Toyota expertise and raise you the primary, secondary, and tertiary balancing harmonics of pretty much any 4-stroke ICE geometry that’s not wildly esoteric

What's your favourite? Straight 6, V8, V12, or V16?

2.2L I5T

Go listen to Group B Audi noises. You’ll understand.

[-] SharkWeek@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago

Different strokes for different folks I guess ... a low-idling big block V8 can cause the car to rumble in juuust the right way that it's best to have vinyl seats

[-] TwilitSky@lemmy.world 0 points 3 weeks ago

I own a Toyota and my knowledge of the brand is middling.

[-] blarth@thelemmy.club 2 points 3 weeks ago

Then you’ll be happy to learn that Toyota developed its own production system that is now used by many other companies around the world. One might argue this is more valuable than the cars they produce.
