Don't upvote Beep [OC] (media.piefed.social)
submitted 2 weeks ago* (last edited 1 week ago) by night_petal@piefed.social to c/comicstrips@lemmy.world

I need to add to this that blocking is not the answer. Actively down vote if your instance allows. The practices discussed here passively harm artists.

I've been thinking, how come I see multiple people bring them up and I haven't seen their posts myself? Turns out I've already blocked them at some point in the past

[-] moondoggie@lemmy.world 7 points 2 weeks ago

That’s why I tag instead of block. Then I get to play a little game and see if I can guess which moron it is before I see the tag. Let’s see now… is this one “AI bootlicker,” “Horndog trying too hard,” “Breathing app shill,” “Is ‘nonce’ the right word,” or “absolute fucking moron?” Oh wait, it’s “credit cropping little bitch.”

[-] rockerface@lemmy.cafe 4 points 2 weeks ago

Quite frankly, I don't care why I did it. I block people to preserve my mental health, whenever I notice that seeing someone's replies is getting on my nerves. If that makes my Lemmy experience an echo chamber, so be it. I'd rather be stuck in my ways than have my mood ruined by words of a stranger I've never seen and will never meet.

No, this is not politics, you are not building an echo chamber. This is about respect, and people can respectfully disagree and I won't block them, but there's no reason anyone should have to put up with disrespectful users. I also blocked that one user that censored every swear word in shitposts. Fuck that person too. They both shouldn't modify people's works without permission.

[-] Agrivar@lemmy.world 5 points 2 weeks ago

Same!

...and now I wonder what they did to earn a block back when I did it.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

They're pretty obnoxious, so it could be any number of things.

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It would be cool if we had a web of trust. So if everyone you've been upvoting keeps downvoting someone, then that someone's posts are hidden by default.

Example:

post hidden due to poor reputationHere's a long rambling story that looks like it might be interesting...
[pages]
... and that's why we should expand child labor.

I rarely block, but I tag with Voyager. That way I'm not missing any conversation, I'll see a warning for comments likely to be disingenuous, and they don't live rent-free in my head.

[-] whaleross@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

And then it hit me. You know why b__p is cropping signatures and remaking comics with AI?

It's not because of some misaligned anti advertisement agenda.

It's because they can't produce anything themselves but want to give the illusion by stealing other people's stuff and desperately trying to funnel all credit to themselves as the provider of funsies.

That is some pathetic bottom feeder behaviour. Defeatist about themselves to even try do something of their own and submitting to theft for validation.

[-] sefra1@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 weeks ago

Not only that, but also, how am I supposed to find the artist's other comics or the follow up if it's a series? Reverse search? It's incredibly stupid.

[-] binarytobis@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

I was unaware of this guy and just looked him up.

Wow, what a loser.

[-] Jikiya@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

I don't like Beep's opinions, or stealing, so have blocked him/her, problem solved

[-] laz@pawb.social 6 points 2 weeks ago

I get it, but doesn't that way of thinking naturally lead to echo chambers and yes-manning? It's better to clean the well rather complaining when we get dirt in our water.

[-] night_petal@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

It also leads to bad actors continually being upvoted.

[-] Ghyste@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago

Just a heads up that Beep has multiple accounts.

[-] whaleross@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

So the mods should do their job and block all of them when they pop up.

[-] night_petal@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

There is one mod. They haven't been active in months.

[-] FreddiesLantern@leminal.space 6 points 2 weeks ago

Ah no worries, already blocked.

[-] RustyNova@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Sadly I can't block them...

I'm too busy downvoting them!

[-] NoTagBacks@lemmy.dbzer0.com 5 points 2 weeks ago

I don't know who that is, but if I could verify/clarify by looking at their post history, I'd probably block them if what you say is true... ohhhhh hey, looks like the dipshit himself commented on this very post like an edgelord and is conveniently the most downvoted comment.

Joke with a message aside, I noticed I already had downvoted the guy multiple times before. Looks like he likes to post ai slop as well and becomes a combative baby bitch when called out. Even better, some of the ai slop uses the "hUmAn BaD" trope. And I did indeed check up on and confirm the cropping out artist credit. He's a combative baby bitch when called out on that, too.

[-] Janx@piefed.social 7 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

he likes to post ai slop

That's an understatement. When Beep doesn't crop out the artist, they literally recreate a worse version of the comic using AI and post that. Yeah...

[-] Krudler@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago
[-] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

Beep wouldn't know what an ad was if it fucked them sideways and never called back

[-] whaleross@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I think b__ps mum was fucked by an ad and walked out on them after realizing what a shameful disgrace they had produced.

[-] whaleross@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

B__p moderates Dubai which is even more weird, the city known for its uncommercial stance on everything.

Anyway, I've blocked that idiit. I ask the mods to ban them from the sub and add the rule that you are not allowed to crop out artists credits.

[-] Alabaster_Mango@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 weeks ago

Just blocked them, thanks for the heads up 👍

[-] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Wheres the artist's signature? Did you crop it out??

[-] SatyrSack@quokk.au 2 points 2 weeks ago
[-] night_petal@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

I am too embarrassed over quality to add a signature. I did this in like 20 mins on my tablet.

[-] venusaur@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Nice job. All their posts are being downvoted.

[-] gigachad@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago
[-] night_petal@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

In general, I agree. But in this case, my opinion (and I am open to suggestions here) is that it needs to be called to attention because the sole mod is Inactive. This troll's actions cause passive harm to artists.

It isn't just being a troll in comments. For that? Sure, whatever. But when it can cause actual harm to artists? I take issue there.

I get that "harm" here is kind of subjective. Artists make pennies on click (at most, and that's if they are relatively successful).

Making the comics less discoverable is more than a slight, imo.

[-] mushroommunk@lemmy.today 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Y'all don't have that asswad blocked already? Huh

[-] night_petal@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

My opinion is that blocking prevents attention to the issues at hand. The people that are just casually viewing won't block, see a good comic, upvote, and move on.

The real issue here is that there is a non-zero amount of these users that will save an edited comic and then share it. These posts should be proactively shamed and called out.

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Blocked them after that post. Either they're trolling, really stupid, or both.

[-] wpb@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

Blocking them isn't enough, because the harm they do with the plagiarism goes beyond stinking up your personal feed. This kind of stuff proliferates. People save the image to post somewhere else, and so on. Annoyingly, plagiarism doesn't seem to be against the rules in this comminity, but I really think it should be.

[-] hzl@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

@lawrence@lemmy.world Care to weigh in?

[-] JonsJava@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

The moderator has been inactive for months. That's why beep is getting away with all their rule breaking.

The admins are actively looking for mods.

[-] night_petal@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

Is there a post about this somewhere?

[-] Uri@infosec.pub 0 points 1 week ago

So, I read this community through RSS. How do I block him 😅

[-] Kolanaki@pawb.social 1 points 1 week ago

Click the three dots by his name and select "block user."

Comic Strips is a community for those who love comic stories.

Rules
  1. 😇 Be Nice!

    • Treat others with respect and dignity. Friendly banter is okay, as long as it is mutual; keyword: friendly.
  2. 🏘️ Community Standards

    • Comics should be a full story, from start to finish, in one post.
    • Posts should be safe and enjoyable by the majority of community members, both here on lemmy.world and other instances.
    • Any comic that would qualify as raunchy, lewd, or otherwise draw unwanted attention by nosy coworkers, spouses, or family members should be tagged as NSFW.
    • Moderators have final say on what and what does not qualify as appropriate. Use common sense, and if need be, err on the side of caution.
  3. 🧬 Keep it Real

    • Comics should be made and posted by real human beans, not by automated means like bots or AI. This is not the community for that sort of thing.
  4. 📽️ Credit Where Credit is Due

    • Comics should include the original attribution to the artist(s) involved, and be unmodified. Bonus points if you include a link back to their website. When in doubt, use a reverse image search to try to find the original version. Repeat offenders will have their posts removed, be temporarily banned from posting, or if all else fails, be permanently banned from posting.
    • Attributions include, but are not limited to, watermarks, links, or other text or imagery that artists add to their comics to use for identification purposes. If you find a comic without any such markings, it would be a good idea to see if you can find an original version. If one cannot be found, say so and ask the community for help!
  5. 📋 Post Formatting

    • Post an image, gallery, or link to a specific comic hosted on another site; e.g., the author's website.
    • Meta posts about the community should be tagged with [Meta] either at the beginning or the end of the post title.
    • When linking to a comic hosted on another site, ensure the link is to the comic itself and not just to the website; e.g.,
      ✅ Correct: https://xkcd.com/386/
      ❌ Incorrect: https://xkcd.com/
  6. 📬 Post Frequency/SPAM

    • Each user (regardless of instance) may post up to five (5 🖐) comics a day. This can be any combination of personal comics you have written yourself, or other author's comics. Any comics exceeding five (5 🖐) will be removed.
  7. 🏴‍☠️ Internationalization (i18n)

    • Non-English posts are welcome. Please tag the post title with the original language, and include an English translation in the body of the post; e.g.,
      Sí, por favor [Spanish/Español]
  8. 🍿 Moderation

    • We are human, just like most everybody else on Lemmy. If you feel a moderation decision was made in error, you are welcome to reach out to anybody on the moderation team for clarification. Keep in mind that moderation decisions may be final.
    • When reporting posts and/or comments, quote which rule is being broken, and why you feel it broke the rules.
Web Accessibility

Note: This is not a rule, but a helpful suggestion.

When posting images, you should strive to add alt-text for screen readers to use to describe the image you're posting:

Another helpful thing to do is to provide a transcription of the text in your images, as well as brief descriptions of what's going on. (example)
