DATA BREACH LEVEL: MAXIMUM

Sasser out of nowhere.

I still regularly visit customers that use Windows XP

[-] gsa32@lemmy.world 8 points 2 years ago

Like, as a daily driver, for specific uses, or both?

[-] Bears_Koolaid@lemmy.world 14 points 2 years ago

I run a CNC machine which requires XP for the control program. The only other option was DOS. We installed it via floppy

[-] kimpilled@infosec.pub 10 points 2 years ago

If it’s not internet connected it’s not that big of a deal

[-] Bears_Koolaid@lemmy.world 6 points 2 years ago

It's actually the most reliable PC we have in terms of actual hardware lol.

i have several clients with xp, or even older, in similar roles. i keep a couple old desktops (slot 1 celeron, anyone?) at the office just in case they need a replacement.

Entertaining human written read.

But if I'm going to be that reckless, I'd rather feel the forbidden joy of riding my motorcycle sans helmet!

Are there any modern web browsers that still work on XP?

So a fork of an older version of Firefox? I will allow it. Beats IE6!

Relevant XKCD comic immediately popped into my mind

[-] tiredofsametab@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

That final frame brought up some repressed memories. It was not a great time to be in a tech support call center; the queues never ended.

Hey, I like to live dangerously! I still have a Windows XP ISO (yes, it's pirated come at me micro$oft) I use to make virtual machines in VirtualBox from time to time.

[-] Voyajer@kbin.social 6 points 2 years ago

Same, except its a legit pro license and I slip-streamed all of the last updates including the windows POS updates and firefox into an unofficial service pack 4 for convenience.

@thingsiplay why are you reducing every comment I post? I can see you're doing them all at once via my profile...

Could I even install DirectX to get modern games working on it? I remember when Vista came out, the big thing was that it had DX10 while XP only went up to 9. And now they're on 12.

[-] dogslayeggs@lemmy.world 7 points 2 years ago

Based on how difficult it was for the authors of this piece to even get a web browser to work or to find drivers for hardware, I doubt you'd get DX10+ to work.

If you can get Vulkan to work, you can potentially use DXVK and VKD3D for DirectX 10-12 support.

[-] JohnEdwa@kbin.social 3 points 2 years ago

IIRC GTX 700 was the last nVidia generation to have XP driver support so you probably wouldn't be able to get it working properly anyway.

[-] redcalcium@lemmy.institute 2 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

You might be able to copy dxvk and dx11/dx12 libraries from Proton/Wine. Not sure if it'll work as you'll somehow need to find a way to get vulkan to work, but sounds like a good weekend project to me.

[-] troyunrau@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 years ago

I have one old Panasonic Toughbook that still runs XP. It's a control system for a specific scientific instrument. Damn thing just keeps chugging along. Fortunately, I physically removed the wifi chip lest anyone get any ideas.

[-] Lettuceeatlettuce@lemmy.ml 6 points 2 years ago

I miss XP, the last OS from Microsoft that felt like it had a clear human touch IMO.

That installation music...oh, baby...

[-] BoxOfFeet@lemmy.world 2 points 2 years ago

I run XP on my Dell E510 (with good capacitors! ). I love revisiting some of my old games that just don't hit the same on modern Win. Battlezone II, Battlefield 1942, Rollercoaster Tycoon.
