The good news is that ecology is everywhere, not just in the woods.
That's just sloppy spiking. Those nails should be driven in at an angle, and the heads of the nails should be removed before being driven all the way in. The hammer should be heavier to make driving the nail easier. If you have more time, you should use a drill and then drop hardened steel rods into the hole.
