Sad but not surprising. Iran got the upper hand, and USA refuses to admit defeat. Throw in something similar to the gambler's fallacy ("we were losing, so we'll be winning!") and USA has more motivation to stick into the war than the rational approach would be.

And odds are they know Iran is trying to play the long game.
