One patient, a 40-year-old man who had been paralyzed from the neck down for six years following a car accident, had experienced four years of rehabilitation stagnancy. After the BCI implantation and intensive training, he gradually rebuilt the neural connections between his brain and hands. Eventually, he was able to remove the BCI device entirely and, supporting his right hand with his left, write his own name without any device assistance.

This is incredible. Extreme traumatic injury can be healed by such innovation like this can dramatically transform society.

On one hand, China is the one developing it so I want to believe they will only implement the chips on the consenting people. On the other hand, the whole brain chip stuff sounds like a something straight out of a dystopia that is developed by the govts for violating their citizens' bodily autonomy.

yup, I'm sure that's what all the paralyzed people who might regain the ability to move are thinking

That's how they all sell it at first. A humanitarian deed. But to become a commercially viable technology they'll need sustained revenue at some point.

This is being developed in China as opposed to whatever capitalist hellscape you live in.

I'm not sure what makes you think China would be any different

Look at the prices of solar panels, batteries, electric cars, and other things coming out of China. Prices remain low and it drives prices down around the world

Mostly, China's long history of being different because of its socialist system which functions on different principles from cappitalism.

that holds true under capitalism for sure. for socialism the benefits to society weigh in against profits and change the equation a bit

for instance, things like medications in China do not reach unaffordable levels like they do in the US because the social good they provide is very high, so the profit margins are extremely low. USians end up paying 5x the price for the same drugs because in the US everything is driven by profit and ONLY profit
