The man admired by many Spaniards as the finest bullfighter ever seen is recovering in hospital after being gored by a bull during his comeback from retirement.

José Antonio Morante, more commonly known by his matador’s moniker Morante de la Puebla, suffered the injury on Sunday, while bullfighting in Seville. Video footage showed him being lifted off his feet as the bull’s horn punctured his buttock, before colleagues drew the animal away from him by distracting it with their capes.

After initially being in a very serious condition with the 10-centimetre wound, which perforated his rectum, Morante is now recovering.

admired by many Spaniards

Sorry but no. Bullfighting is actually very unpopular in Spain. It's a relic of the past that's kept on life support by conservative politics.

Very happy to hear he has been gored by the bull. Couldn't have happened to a worse person. And this is always the reaction of pretty much everyone I know whenever this happens

Last line:

A poll taken last year by the BBVA Foundation found 77 per cent of Spaniards found the pastime “unacceptable”.

[-] ggtdbz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

pastime

Really? I think these events could be memorialized as a sort of messed up cultural thing to look back upon, but using such a banal word for it feels pretty odd in its own right

[-] ThePowerOfGeek@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I suppose 'many' is a relative term. As a pure number of people I'm sure there are tens of thousands of Spaniards who love the 'sport'. But as a percentage of the population, yeah you're right - the large majority think it's stupid and want it gone.

[-] Tiral@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah, people don't often realize the bull is literally being tortured by getting stabbed. Then it's eventually killed. I mean if you're killing animals for food do it as humane as possible, but for a show? No.

[-] ichwillhierraus@feddit.org 4 points 2 weeks ago

Spaniard here.

Bullfighting is nowadays extremely niche of the extreme right wind retards. No normal perdon liked it, let alone knows the name of that arschloch.

We are happy the bull managed to win a small fight.

[-] Enkrod@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

Man, I love the EU.

Spaniard here

German username and uses the word Arschloch

That was all well and good, but I was hoping it was the video if the matadors asshole getting reemed by the bull and not a live concert song in spanish that's apparently anti bull fighting.

[-] EpicFailGuy@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

The video is all over the net ... here ya go friend.

https://www.the-sun.com/news/16251219/bullfighter-gored-bum-matador-rushed-hospital/

The point I was trying to make was that we've been protesting it since the 90's and it's almost extinct.

[-] ColeSloth@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah. I heard damned near everyone is against it there.

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I always root for the bull.

[-] Fedegenerate@fedinsfw.app 2 points 2 weeks ago

Wife approved comment.

[-] Iusedtobeanalien@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I don't know anyone who doesn't root for the bulls, fuck bullfighting, fuck bullfighters, fuck the running of the bulls too. I hope everyone involved gets lifechanging injuries.

[-] RIotingPacifist@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

If the bull wins it should get to retire.

[-] i_stole_ur_taco@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Fuck that. It should level up and get to pick improved armor and weapons and then go back to gore more asshole matadors.

New pixelated roguelike indie game?

[-] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

This brings me joy. I hope the bull is alright.

[-] Naich@piefed.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Nice one, bull. Right up the arse. 😁👍

[-] merdaverse@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I've been giving Spain too much credit lately, but I forgot that this shit is still legal. Barbaric traditions from the past should stay in the past.

[-] Bloefz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Yes but most people absolutely hate it. And some parts of Spain forbid it already.

[-] mech@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

Oh no, I hope he didn't injure his horns!

[-] BedSharkPal@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 weeks ago

Heck yeah. Go bull!

[-] Fedegenerate@fedinsfw.app 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

The 10 cm wound perforating his rectum is the second biggest asshole, after the bull fighter himself.

[-] magnue@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Good job bull

[-] inb4_FoundTheVegan@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

[-] GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

So soon after a millionaire was stomped into paste by elephants?

I think things are actually getting better.

[-] SaharaMaleikuhm@feddit.org 1 points 2 weeks ago

Finally some good news

[-] finallymadeanaccount@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Given how the bulls are treated prior to the bullfighting ... good!

[-] Bloefz@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I'm glad that my community in Spain doesn't permit this animal abuse anymore.

[-] TheVoiceOfRaison@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 weeks ago

Mess with the bull, you get the horns.

[-] OhStopYellingAtMe@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago
  1. Mess with the bull.
  2. Get the horns.
[-] probable_possum@leminal.space 1 points 2 weeks ago

“It was the most painful goring I have ever suffered in my career,” he told El Mundo newspaper from his hospital bed. “I felt enormous pain and I was very scared because I could tell that the bull had gored me and I thought I was bleeding a lot.”

Perspective switch

[-] Teknikal@anarchist.nexus 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

They don't do themselves any favours animal wise there's this, pushing donkeys of diving boards and I've also seen articles with them allegedly using dogs/cats as live shark bait for fishing a half dozen times in British papers.

It's weird I'm kind of half respecting them right now for standing up to Trump/USA but then I remember these things.

[-] GalacticGrapefruit@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Apparently, only a minority of Spanish citizens actually support this caliber of animal cruelty. The rest of them have, thankfully, done the sane and compassionate thing and evolved past this barbarism and its excuses. Here's hoping that more people understand why this shit belongs in the dark ages with dogfighting, cockfights, and betta fish fighting.

[-] wonderingwanderer@sopuli.xyz 0 points 2 weeks ago

When you kill animals for sport, you can't be upset when the other team shows up.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 0 points 2 weeks ago

its only fair the animal responds in kind.

[-] pineapplelover@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 2 weeks ago

Forgive my ignorance but what's the hate with bullfighting? Are the bulls treated harshly? If so, that's understandable

[-] BradleyUffner@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

They are tortured with hooked ribbons, called banderillas that just piece the skin in order to enrage them and "prove the skill and bravery" of the matador before they even start trying to kill the bull. A skilled matador can kill the bull quickly, but a poor one can require multiple stabs over 30 minutes or longer.

I went on a highschool trip to Spain, and a bullfight was one of the events. It was horrific. The matador was not skilled, and the poor bull died incredibly slowly and painfully. I'm actually getting a little choked up just recalling it.

[-] matlag@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

I will assume this is not a troll question. Corridas follow a strict protocol and rules.

First, they get several men in the arena to evaluate the bull, the matador will tease him and other men incite him to complete his charges, so that he doesn't stay on the matador in the center. Fresh and not well evaluated, he could be a risk for the matador.

Second: picadors (horse back) pierce the bull and try to slice through his neck muscles, so that he can't raise his head no more, or not too much.

Then, the matador pitch some banderillas on its back.

To kill it, they use swords they get all the way in, then incite the bull to turn left and right so that the sword will cause additional internal damages.

When the bull finally falls, the matador cuts its ear as a trophy. Sometimes the bull is still agonizing.

I let you decide if that's torture, fair fight, or whatever justification they use to keep that tradition alive.

[-] ramenshaman@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

They are. I believe that, traditionally, they kill them.

[-] calcopiritus@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

Only after torturing them for hours though

[-] FlashMobOfOne@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Here's hoping the bull had a little fun getting this motherfucker back for all of his fallen comrades.

[-] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago

It didn't. It was terrified, in horrible pain, bleeding out, and just trying to defend itself.

[-] anon_8675309@lemmy.world 0 points 2 weeks ago

Is he … smiling with that horn in his ass?

[-] mech@feddit.org 0 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Morante has been open about his lifelong struggles with mental illness
“I have thought about death as a relief, but I can’t do it, I have a family and responsibility,” he has said.

Probably thought this was his grand finale.
