It’s hard to retrofit our garbage designed cities to be “bike friendly” because there was seemingly no thought put into their design in the first place other than to cram them in as much as possible with no room to ever expand anything.

Also Australia is a big place, most people need cars anyway.

Without clicking, it's the same issue the US has. It's a colonial project and it's cities instead of emerging from use and desire, were centrally planned around motor vehicles.

Edit after reading: imo I think an article should seek to answer the question it sets out in its title. At the same time that this article reaches into history to try and explain that happening in Victoria it's very shallow in its reach. It also avoids contemporaneous examples.
