Heat is one of the clearest signs of the climate crisis. The planet-heating gases pumped out by burning fossil fuels envelop the planet like a blanket, warming the Earth. Scientists are clear that climate change is fueling more extreme heat waves — and Europe is the planet’s fastest-warming continent.

“We know beyond a shadow of a doubt that heat wave events such as this have been made more likely and more severe due to climate change,” said Peter Thorne, director of ICARUS Climate Research Centre at Maynooth University, Ireland. “But nevertheless many of the records being set, particularly in the UK and France, are mind-bogglingly crazy,” he added.

Fucking mouth breathers over here are like "it was hotter than this in the summer of 1973".

Yes, that was once. In summer.

It is spring. The avg temperature this time of year in the UK is 16c. It doubled overnight.

Thankfully when global warming Hits it's peak and AMOC vanishes, you Britishers will finally experience cold weather again. /s

India entered the chat...
India starts typing furiously...

Edit: god, the ppl in this group are limited, dumb and ignorantly self-confident...

I'm always baffled by those weirdos who insist on chiming in.

Me: "goddamn its hot, its like 32C"

Weirdo: "yeah but its 45C in the Arabian desert!!11!"

Me: "okay but I live north of the arctic circle and its May."

Like yeah, my winters are practically a UK summer, but at least the infrastructure is built for it. Too many people are heading for wet bulb temperatures without adequate protection.

[-] Greyghoster@aussie.zone 3 points 1 week ago

They recon 50% of the population live in areas where the wet bulb temperature is going to make their area unliveable. Massive migration is expected. It will definitely upset the close the borders mob.

India, a subtropical nation has hotter temperatures than the UK.

In other news water is wet

I'm so fucking glad I moved to a basement apartment on top of a hill last year.
Yeah I'll sweat like a pig when I get home after work (I commute by bicycle) but then I get home and it's cool inside.

[-] Edelscheiss@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Now if you would get an apartment downhill it would be even cooler because thats where the cool air goes to.

[-] mech@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

But on top is where there's always a cool breeze.
And not every region has inversion weather.

[-] crandlecan@mander.xyz 3 points 1 week ago

Is it because of solar panels and electric cars? I fracking knew it!! 😤

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

so i was just walking to the nearest supermarket when the supermarket radio (they usually play music) calmly announced "for the next week, we expect a warm 35°C" ... wtf

After living in the Netherlands for about three years (moved here from the US) I finally gave in and ordered an air conditioner. I was slightly worried about my neighbors judging us for it (it'll hang out the window, it's hard to not notice) only to learn that they also bought one that same day.

All the homes are brick, and are well suited to retaining heat through winter. I only set my thermostat to ~65F for a single room and leave the rest of the apartment unheated and the other rooms average about 50F. In summer though it may peak at 85F outside, but inside it will hit 100F and just stay there for hours even when it's back down to 65F outside at night.

Awesome in winter, and an oven in summer.

Why? I'm clearly addressing an American audience from a non-American location; specifying if I'm using Fahrenheit or Celsius just helps avoid confusion. Does the label of the unit bother you?

[-] Danquebec@sh.itjust.works 0 points 1 week ago

A US audience?

world@lemmy.world

The label doesn't bother us. The fact we have no idea what temperatures you are referring to doesn't let us understand your comment.

[-] BozeKnoflook@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Yes, a US audience:

  1. CNN is an American company
  2. My comment was specifically for Americans that may not understand or appreciate the situation, as houses there are built very differently and are less prone to baking their occupants during summer.

Why does my labeling the unit of measurement bother you so much you have to comment on it specifically? I'm genuinely confused here.

[-] treehugger6@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Yes, I moved to the Netherlands for the rain and wind. Not kidding. Now I have to move again.

[-] BozeKnoflook@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

Hell yea; I love the rain here. You'll get so many weird looks from Dutch people saying that, but whatever. Fuck summer, I'd rather live with year round winter personally.

[-] monkeyman76@fedinsfw.app 1 points 1 week ago

Oh man, you are going to love the upcoming nuclear winter..

[-] crandlecan@mander.xyz 1 points 1 week ago

The snow... So pretty against the warm sun light 💖

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

or go live in the artic, 6months of sunshine and 6 months of darkness.

[-] panthera_@lemmy.today 0 points 1 week ago

Trump doesn't believe in climate change but he will see its effects.

[-] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 week ago

he only needs to stare at a solar eclipes for a couple hours.

[-] jumperalex@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Let's hope he doesn't. Because if he does that means it happens even sooner than his natural life lasts.

Yes. I know climate change is happening now. but that's harder to incorporate into a short comment on the hope that a narcissist won't live long enough to have to give a shit about it.

[-] panthera_@lemmy.today 0 points 1 week ago

Even if Trump doesn't change his view on climate change, hopefully others who don't believe will. Many skeptics in Europe probably now believe.

[-] jumperalex@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

I'm here right now in fact. Been in Prague since the 15th and now Innsbruck and the heat has been crazy

[-] panthera_@lemmy.today -2 points 1 week ago

Hopefully, it makes European skeptics of climate change believe.
