Sadly died of cancer. Apparently fought it for some time, but kept it private.

That's a shame. I had no idea he was 70.

It's weird: 10 years ago I would've said, "Well, 70 is a good long life, right?" But now I have parents that age and it doesn't feel that old.

As a 65 year old, I am gratified that you think so

[-] Sorchist@kbin.social 15 points 1 year ago

"Too young" keeps on going up as your parents get older.

[-] Holodeck_Moriarty@lemm.ee 14 points 1 year ago

Yeah, 70 is too young.

I think most people imagine themselves living until 90-100. Sadly there aren't any guarantees in life.

[-] Ghost33313@kbin.social 13 points 1 year ago

I nearly died when I was 30. Made me way less optimistic about making it to 90. Now I just want to live long enough for my kids to be adults (60), everything else is just gravy.

Glad you're still with us.

I'm ambivalent.

I was in that boat. I'm 56 now, and I've already had friends taken by cancer. It seems much more like a crapshoot at this point.

I only really remember PeeWee's Playhouse on the big screen in the student union building on Saturday mornings when we were all hung over. It was a trip.

[-] Donttaintmebro@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

I didn't even know he was sick!

[-] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 31 points 1 year ago

Pee Wee's Playhouse Christmas Special still airs right before Die Hard at my house every Christmas Eve, followed by as much of the Star Wars Christmas Special as I can take.

Why, yes, I was born in the 1980s. Why do you ask?

expresses incredulous bewilderment in wookie

it helps if you watch the RiffTrax version. it helps a lot

[-] Kandorr@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Do, please, go on. I have not heard of this version.

[-] yip-bonk@kbin.social 20 points 1 year ago

He’s a rebel, Dottie. A loner.

[-] Che_Donkey@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

I knew he was, but what am I?* . . . *sad....I am sad

[-] drcouzelis@lemmy.zip 14 points 1 year ago

:( My favorite movie with him is Mystery Men. :D

[-] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago

I still have a huge crush on Janeane Garofalo from that movie.

Cheech and Chong's Next Movie

His character saved that movie without a doubt

[-] nocturne213@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Cheech and Chong posted a TikTok of all of Paul's lines from The Next Movie today. It really hit me hard.

[-] 18_24_61_b_17_17_4@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Was that the one where he was yelling about hamburgers?

[-] SulaymanF@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

The Spleen!

He was so good at characters that I didn’t immediacy associate that with PeeWee.

[-] saucyloggins@lemmy.world 12 points 1 year ago

No not Pee-wee :(

Big Adventure is an absolute classic. It should be revered on the same level as Princess Bride imo.

[-] niktemadur@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Big Adventure is a masterpiece on par with the best of Charlie Chaplin of the Marx Brothers, with Pee-Wee as complex and complete of a creation as The Tramp or Harpo.

As a kid in the 80’s I used to get up super early on Saturdays to catch the cartoons. I’d always make sure to tape Pee-Wee’s Playhouse for my siblings, who were teenagers at the time and thus tended to sleep in. Being so much older than me, my siblings and I never had a lot of crossover in our interests. Pee-Wee was always one thing we could all agree on, though. So I’d watch Playhouse at least twice every Saturday…once on my own and then again with my brother and sister. Great times.

I was a weird kid and Pee-Wee not only showed that being weird was okay, but that it could be celebrated. Thanks for that, Paul Reubens.
