Alt: proprietary software devs trying to live off their work as their primary income source while still allowing people to use their product for free

[-] eating3645@lemmy.world 66 points 1 year ago

Get out of here with a level-headed response. We came to rabble.

Rabble rabble! Something something evil! Rabble!

[-] regular_human@lemmy.world 53 points 1 year ago

I swear, lemmy users have proven to be so entitled. Just don't buy it.

[-] zloubida@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

If it spies on me, if it shows me ads, then it's not free.

[-] spacedancer@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I think a lot of the people who are against are the ones who don't like the ad-removal model, because you are paying to remove ads on an app that uses a platform whose foundation is built against ads and tracking. The subscription model or one-time payment for life is fair IMO; people are free to support the dev (and please support the lemmy devs and instance admins too!). It's the ads (and tracking that come with it) that's kinda weird.

[-] beyond@linkage.ds8.zone 12 points 1 year ago

As an end-user I believe I am entitled to the freedom to use, modify, and share the software I use. If your business model is incompatible with my values I won't support you, simple as. I don't have any problem monetarily supporting developers but not if they disagree with my principles.

I'm pretty sure I've seen this exact argument made against ad-blockers, too.

[-] HKayn@dormi.zone -4 points 1 year ago

You do have the freedom to modify the proprietary binary you're being given. You just can't distribute your modifications.

[-] snooggums@kbin.social 10 points 1 year ago

Reality: what you pay goes more to monetization than the user experience

As if the majority of you will ever donate to a FOSS dev. This is one of the reasons I went into open source hardware instead. At least you can't easily copy a PCB, you have to build your own or buy mine. I'm not a corporation. I'm a dude living in the ghettos of Baltimore trying to do my hustle and live.

Wait is there a market for custom/open-source hardware? If so where?

[-] TimeSquirrel@kbin.social 7 points 1 year ago

Tindie.com is where I'm at. Most products there are open source.

[-] june@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

That’s p interesting and something I could see myself doing.

How’s the revenue steam for you?

[-] TurboDiesel@lemmy.world 65 points 1 year ago

The irony of a Marxist-Leninist instance devaluing someone's labor is just chef's kiss

[-] tdawg@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

It's kinda sad honestly. It really shows that people misplace their understanding of who the class war is against

lemmy becoming as whiney and as entitled as reddit users

[-] MrLuemasG@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

Considering most lemmy users were literally the whiniest and most entitled reddit users that got run off the platform, it shouldn't surprise anybody.

I say this knowing full well that I am one of that whiny reddit users that came to lemmy

[-] kampang@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

This is why we can't have nice things.

[-] Moohamin12@lemm.ee 58 points 1 year ago

Things cost money.

Boo hoo really.

[-] krotti@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 year ago

"If you don't work for me for free, I am going to insult you"

And before anyone even decides to reply to this, donate something to FOSS projects you like, rather than throw anger at me. Every little bit helps

[-] muix@infosec.pub 8 points 1 year ago

Free doesn't mean gratis

[-] solidsnake2085@lemmy.world 40 points 1 year ago

Sync is the best lemmy app I've used.

[-] botorfj@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

ikr? appreciate that they came to lemmy and gave us a polished experience on android

[-] Laticauda@lemmy.ca 39 points 1 year ago

My God this is the whiniest post I've seen on the topic yet.

[-] Phen@lemmy.eco.br 33 points 1 year ago

I make open source software; for several years it was completely foss and it never managed to keep the lights on on its own. When we started adding paid features (still open, but not free), it didn't go well with the community at all.

Folks would suggest all sorts of business models which always boiled down to "do make money from it, just not from me".

[-] ruckblack@sh.itjust.works 33 points 1 year ago

Holy shit. I might need to take a week off Lemmy or something. Y'all need to learn more about how software dev works. Insane response.

[-] ElPussyKangaroo@lemmy.world 28 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Software that will one day stop being supported because people will only use FOSS apps. They won't contribute in terms of feedback (that helps improve User Experience and as a result improve the use of that app) or in terms of donation.

They will only use it and roam around with an air of superiority about using FOSS over proprietary.

This is why FOSS has issues. Gatekeepers who won't do shit to contribute, but only make fun of and call out people who actually do some shit.

[-] nicman24@kbin.social 26 points 1 year ago
[-] DmMacniel@feddit.de 9 points 1 year ago

This is the way. Either by money or other types of contributions.

[-] kamenoko@sh.itjust.works 25 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Most people who make FOSS full time that people interact with (Linux, Python, Git, Node.js etc) work at large tech companies where their work is being subsidized.

Solo devs don't have that luxury, their income is directly tied to their product. They don't have the same privileges.

It baffles me how much people get shit twisted again and again.

[-] ArrogantAnalyst@feddit.de 23 points 1 year ago

A bad take if I’ve ever seen one.

[-] Ejh3k@midwest.social 19 points 1 year ago

Fucking cry about it.

[-] aetrix@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

stop crying

[-] pixeltree@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago
[-] regular_human@lemmy.world 9 points 1 year ago

"i want free shit waaa waaa" is all i see in these self righteous posts

[-] Cinnamon3431@lemmy.world 0 points 1 year ago

as someone who regularily donates to the FOSS projects that I use, I can tell you it is not about the money. It's about the freedom that FOSD brings

[-] player2@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 1 year ago

You clearly haven't looked at the options and feature set of sync. It would be the muscular bodybuilder in this analogy.

[-] MooseBoys@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

Have you ever looked at linux kernel CLs? Many of the more substantial ones come from someone @intel.com, @microsoft.com, @google.com, etc.

[-] UhBell@lemmy.world -3 points 1 year ago

Holy ratio batman
