The FBI is working with law enforcement officials in Colorado in the wake of threats made against state Supreme Court justices who ruled last week to remove Donald Trump from the state’s 2024 presidential ballot.

“The FBI is aware of the situation and working with local law enforcement,” FBI Public Affairs Officer Vikki Migoya said in a statement provided to CNN on Monday. “We will vigorously pursue investigations of any threat or use of violence committed by someone who uses extremist views to justify their actions regardless of motivation.”

A spokesperson for the Colorado Judicial Branch would not comment on reports of threats to the justices, and a message left with the Denver Police Department was not immediately returned Monday afternoon. Master Trooper Gary Cutler, a spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol, said any threats against judges would be handled by local authorities.

In addition to the federal response, state and local law enforcement officials and non-government research groups have been monitoring rhetoric on extremist online forums for signs it might translate to tangible threats to public officials.

...while Trump himself gets Secret Service protection for life. Go figure.

Imagine getting a Secret Service job and you have to be the first guy to make sure Trump doesn't get shanked in the prison yard.

[-] andrewta@lemmy.world 27 points 11 months ago

There's actually a legal question that hasn't been fully resolved : would he keep his secret service protection. Even the secret service has said that it could go either way.

[-] Bdtrngl@lemmy.world 28 points 11 months ago

Even if convicted Trump would never end up in anything past Club Fed or house arrest.

[-] chiliedogg@lemmy.world 23 points 11 months ago

Honestly, I just want him deplatformed. I don't care of the cost is letting him live in absolute luxury the rest of his life. He needs to be silenced and at this point justice for his crimes is way less important.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 20 points 11 months ago

I want him in a cell for life. The goal isn’t just to stop him but also the next guy.

[-] hashferret@lemmy.world 8 points 11 months ago

Deplatformed from which platform? When your fanatics are deranged enough to follow you anywhere... They'll be chomping at the bit to hear what he said in his most recent call from prison.

Now imagine a secret service officer who absolutely is devoted to Trump and would take a bullet for him without even thinking about it.

Shudder.

without even thinking about it.

He wouldn't have to; loyalty with Trump is a one-way street.

[-] orbitz@lemmy.ca 14 points 11 months ago

You'd think if the founders imagined a president being so corrupt he would have any services removed, but no the US politics was ratfucked so much Trump was president and gets a soapbox to spouse out more shit than a heard of animals. Maybe the constitution should have some educational amendments added so people can understand what a con man he is. I'm just a neighbor but it's worrying when the largest military in the world gets controlled by someone bothered by people saying he has small hands.

[-] Earthwormjim91@lemmy.world 13 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

The secret service didn’t exist when the founders wrote the constitution. It was created in 1865 to investigate counterfeiting, and was assigned to Presidential protection in 1901.

There’s actually nothing in the constitution that gives a former president anything at all. That all came from the former presidents act of 1958.

There was no pension or other benefits, or any protection before then.

[-] spider@lemmy.nz 5 points 11 months ago

Probably wouldn't happen at a Club Fed, though.

[-] admiralteal@kbin.social 3 points 11 months ago

Don't forget they're cops.

Cops like Trump, generally. Doubt it's hard to find agents that want to be assigned to Trump.

[-] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 89 points 11 months ago

I hope they round up these right wing terrorists. They've been a plight on this country for too long. Getting away with too much. Worse yet, others have spent decades trying to both sides everything, and now we can see how wrong they were, and still are.

[-] alquicksilver@lemmy.world 6 points 11 months ago

I hope they (somehow) manage to do it before they can vote in the next presidential election. It's the time of year to ask for a miracle, right?

[-] drmeanfeel@lemmy.world 3 points 11 months ago

Cops and Fancy Cops™ aren't going to round up themselves

How to win at life: death threats to supreme court justices. Like wtf? Who even considers that an option, ever?

I think you're right. People say I use the word "terrorist" too much, but this fits the definition in my opinion.

[-] Rooskie91@discuss.online 25 points 11 months ago

People whipped up into a frenzy by bad faith media and demogaugs.

[-] finkrat@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago

People with the emotional maturity of a 2 year old, entitled and raised to attack anything they don't like, were never taught ethical principles, nor how to cooperate with others in society, whipped into a angry, rabid frenzy by their religious and political platforms run by wolves who only care about advancing their wealth at the expense of positive progress that will actively help said people and other people in society and limit the overreach of corporations and runaway capitalist exploitation

All because "Joe is a traitor" and "I miss the good ol' days", and often outright -ism (across a myriad of protected categories, race, sex/gender, etc.)

[-] S_204@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago

People who think they're anonymous behind a social media username.

[-] neurogenesis@lemmy.dbzer0.com 25 points 11 months ago

Narrator: In the end, they never called them terrorists.

[-] Fades@lemmy.world 24 points 11 months ago

Throw the book at these fucking traitors to the constitution

[-] BeautifulMind@lemmy.world 23 points 11 months ago

I don't want to see news about the FBI saying it's looking into this, I want to hear about indictments

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 10 points 11 months ago

Presumably one part of the purpose for the press release is to try and prevent/reduce additional threats.

"Hey assholes, we are actually watching you."

[-] AlwaysNowNeverNotMe@kbin.social 9 points 11 months ago

Do you think they're helping local law enforcement with their spelling on the death threats?

[-] gregorum@lemm.ee 1 points 11 months ago

Yeah, I’m sure they’re totally on that
