Probably not that unpopular around here
You would be suprised just look at the amount of people sync for lemmy community have 3 open source lemmy apps like jerboa , voyager and eternity combined doesn't have that much users. And i guess we can kinda also calculate the userbase from that statics
Sync had a large userbase on Reddit, it makes sense that people would keep using what they enjoy.
It's actually surprising and nice to see how popular Jerboa, Voyager, Thunder, Eternity (Summit is also FOSS I think?) became as they had no previous userbase.
Eternity was forked off Infinity for reddit so It had a userbase before
It's a fork, but not the same devs, so less strong community follow than Sync.
By that logic, Voyager is inspired by Apollo, and get some of those people, but was not a direct continuation.
Its funny the day infinitu broke i came to eternity. I had practically nothing change except now im free as in freedom lol.
Yes and jerboa's ui look like one of tge reddit apps can't remember which and voyager ui is based on apollo so all of them kinda has their own userbase .
Jerboa is great, it reminded me a little uglier Reddit Is Fun so I went for it.
Yeah i too use jerboa
Yeah but lemmy as the whole moral and ethics of lemmy is different i am still very very dissappointed . It's like we preach but don't follow
Just because the open source movement is louder here doesn't mean they're more populous.
Don't mistake noise for quantity.
I agree
To be fair, some people here just want memes and a place to discuss about movies, they don't plan on overthrowing the big tech or wait for the year of the Linux desktop.
We asked ljdawson to continue development of sync, but ported to lemmy.
Did you forget what happened when sync got released?
I don't know what happened to forget it . Did some users come aboard or something ?
Sorry, i just assumed everyone on lemmy started using it before sync got ported over
When sync for lemmy was released, the majority of people hated the app because it was proprietary and it used google ads
Even though sync is the most used app, the popular opinion is that sync is bad
Yeah and the dev seem to be abandoning it occasionally
We tend to attribute value to what we have to pay for, and the more we have to pay the more "valuable" our perception of the product is.
What is received for free tends to be considered "valueless".
I don't know, I use Lemmy for mostly free (I try to support my instances from time to time), it definitely has value.
I also don't have to pay to see my friends, still quite valuable to me.
Everyone should be allowed to use whatever app they want without judgement. It's lemmy for fucks sake, chill out.
Some folk have unpopular opinions.
Some folk want to have unpopular opinions.
Everything ok at home, bud?
This poster is definitely a youngin. Nothing wrong with that but i think this'n needs a block until they're a bit less excitable
Using all open source software as a graphic designer is very doable but I'd be putting myself at a disadvantage compared to those paying for the latest Adobe.
I'm a big fan of open source software and use it as often as possible and I too would love to see open source be more widely used, but I also don't have a problem with people making a living or having a business selling software for a profit. If you have a talent like creating software and you want to use that talent to make open source software that's great, but if you want to use your talents making software for money I think that's fine as well.
Oh man, I completely disagree about payment, though. I'd rather give it in my money than my data.
Me too but is what it is
Nah fuck that. Take my money. Don't sniff my ass.
proud user of jerboa and eternity, they have their issues of course, but nothing beats the dopamine rush of getting a bugfix for something you reported!!!
Edit: In an attempt to make a joke, I exaggerated the impact of issues with jerboa/eternity, I decided to rephrase. I love the apps and the people creating them, their efforts is highly appreciated and I dream one day that such effort would economically viable.
Eternity's dev has been doing a very good work for a single person
It's also an open source program for lemmy. We've got a pretty tight knit community as a whole and condensing that down to coders, people with free time, people who want to make an app, and people who want to spend their free time making an open source app.. It gets really narrow.
Anything we have is a godsend because we'd be using browsers on our phone otherwise.
Locked as there are too much drama going on hete.
Unpopular Opinion
Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!
How voting works:
Vote the opposite of the norm.
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

1. NO POLITICS
Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.
