"A ceasefire is on the table today, for six weeks to be built on into something more enduring if Hamas would simply release women, wounded and elderly," White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters

Hamas says it will only accept a deal based on a permanent ceasefire that ends the war and includes an Israeli troop withdrawal from Gaza, rather than another temporary truce.

"We're determined to try to generate a ceasefire where at least six weeks with the hostages coming out and then try to build on that into something more enduring, but I can't make any predictions about where this will lie," Sullivan said.

If they're going to declare arbitrary subsets of the hostages, why stop at female? Why not demand only the short hostages, or only the ones with blue eyes?

[-] throwwyacc@lemmynsfw.com 5 points 8 months ago

I think it's just the lower likelihood that they will end up as combatants. If you're in a military conflict you're generally more likely to hand over hostages that are less likely to come back and fight you

Clearly you missed all the female IDF soldiers thirst-posting on Tik Tok dancing on the rubble of destroyed homes and schools.

[-] throwwyacc@lemmynsfw.com 3 points 8 months ago

No I saw. I'm just under the impression that it's a lower likelihood that women in the IDF are serving in direct combat roles. I mean maybe they are, maybe all of Hamas' hostages are highly trained combatants, although I doubt it

…what. IDF soldiers are literally dancing on graves? I mean, I guess I’m not surprised. I’ve seen videos of them gleefully spewing genocidal bile and discussing their genocidal exploits.

There's one of an IDF soldier proposing to another, with romantic music and fellow soldiers applauding, on top of the rubble of a school they blew up. It's cartoonishly evil, and it couldn't be even more cartoonishly evil unless they did something ridiculous like bomb Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, on Christmas day. I mean, that would be insane on so many levels if they did that, right? Yeah well, they did - https://www.livemint.com/news/world/israeli-forces-strike-bethlehem-on-christmas-day-amid-raids-across-occupied-west-bank-11703498336126.html

Israel's draft is co-ed.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@kbin.social -2 points 8 months ago

That makes sense the other way around because Hamas only employs men as fighters, but the IDF is co-ed.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@kbin.social 0 points 8 months ago

"Longer" will these idiots never learn? Hamas has been very clear about their demands.

[-] windoesnt@linux.community 5 points 8 months ago

In my opinion, I don't feel like they care about hamas demands and if they did it would be like admitting to their accusations. I'm not very smart so I could be wrong.

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I get the same feeling too. Like they're throwing a tantrum and expecting reality to bend to their wills (which has been Israel's modus operandi for the last... century?)

[-] JustZ@lemmy.world 0 points 8 months ago

Israel doesn't care about Hamas's demands. Pretty standard practice all over the world not to negotiate with terrorists, let alone give them a country. It's never going to happen. Hamas can surrender and maybe live if they give up the hostages, or they can be killed to the man even if it takes another twenty years. They are defeated and completely outmatched, they have nothing to offer at the bargaining table except the hostages and Israel is willing to write them off if it averts another twenty years of terror attacks.

[-] snek@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

how horrible Hamas is can still never justify killing 13,000 children.

[-] nonailsleft@lemm.ee 1 points 8 months ago

They agreed to a temporary ceasefire in november (?) though

[-] NoneOfUrBusiness@kbin.social 3 points 8 months ago

Exactly, and that was a disaster in every sense of the word. Which is why Hamas is refusing the current offer (not like Israel likes it very much either), because the promise that "we'll start with a temporary ceasefire and turn it into something more enduring" was made before in November and in the end Hamas lost half their hostages for a whole lot of nothing. Even a random guy watching from the sidelines like me can tell; even if the 6-week ceasefire succeeds and becomes permanent, it'll come at the cost of Israel occupying Gaza, or at least half of it, and that's assuming it succeeds and Israel doesn't continue doing their thing in six weeks.

PS: I don't remember when it was either, could've been December.

[-] nonailsleft@lemm.ee 1 points 8 months ago

Well, they got a few hundred prisoners released (release of prisoners was their stated goal for their field trip) and a few weeks pause in the fighting, which I imagine they could use from a strategic pov. But it's obvious that Israel considers those 100 hostages only secondary to taking out Hamas. Which puts the latter in quite of a pickle in these negotiations. And they can't kill them because that would erode their international support

[-] JustZ@lemmy.world 0 points 8 months ago

The goal was and still is the destruction of Hamas's ability to carry out further attacks. Rescuing hostages was always a side quest.

[-] merthyr1831@lemmy.world 0 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Hamas ALREADY OFFERED EVERY HOSTAGE.

HAMAS ALREADY OFFERED EVERY HOSTAGE AND ISRAEL SAID NO.

Fuck this man, every fucking lie will be twisted to make Hamas look like the bloodthirsty goons while Israel parades its slaughter and destruction and sells the rubble to fascists.

[-] JustZ@lemmy.world -1 points 8 months ago

The only fascists in Gaza are Hamas. Israel is a democracy, I'm surprised you didn't know. It's kind of a central factor in western policy on this matter.

[-] merthyr1831@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Genocide apologism detected: opinion discarded.

Go back to reddit if you want to be a smug zionist

[-] JustZ@lemmy.world -1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Why, you want to be in a bubble of safe feelings? Good luck with that.

I think it's exactly that attitude that prevents you from seeing what's right in front of your eyes.

Can't get over the hump. All you see are the headlines, not the last sentence that says "these reports could not be independently verified."

[-] snek@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago

This is the peak highlight of your dissonance

[-] snek@lemmy.world 1 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

Why can't both Hamas AND Israel be facist? At least be fair in your judgement.

Also again the fact that you have not blocked me yet tells me that you know I'm right. Maybe it's painful to admit?

[-] blahsay@lemmy.world -2 points 8 months ago

Hamas: 'But who will we rape during the holy month? Also that would mean the Palestinians get fed which we evidently oppose.'
