So it's fine for people that live a normal life to die for nothing, but not people that waste their time reading useless stuff fulltime?

Dietary, schedule, other religious restrictions. Probably easier to have em all in one unit than have to wrangle 1 guy here, a few there.

During training they observe Shabbos and don't leave the perimeter, for example. Carve out time for study, etc.
