Me waiting for Olive to become stable: mr-burns-waiting

[-] clubb@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

What's olive? Can't find it anywhere.

[-] QuazarOmega@lemy.lol 8 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

This Olive: https://olivevideoeditor.org

It's really ambitious, it tries to rival DaVinci Resolve with its node system, I already appreciate it a lot for its performance, though it might be lacking in some features for now.
One of them was masking, one time I even used Blender for a project (that I never completed), because its masking feature is just better and stabler, trying to animate the nodes of mask paths in Olive completely crashed it. It was some time ago now, though, so it might already be fixed.

Still, Blender is kinda underrated as a video editor, it's very capable and it's incredibly stable, I think I experienced max 1 or 2 crashes if any, while Kdenlive has always been pretty crashy for me, it also doesn't get enough love from the devs, there's so much potential in integrating the 3D viewport into the VSE, ahh if only...
Aaand now this turned into a Blender ad for some reason, lmao

[-] idotherock@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

I used Blender as a video editor for a while. It worked really well. Very stable and the proxy system made editing on a low powered machine really nimble. I remember there was some project that offered a Blender setup geared specifically towards video editing. Can’t recall the name though. The Blender Velvets?!? That doesn’t sound right …

I also tried Olive many years back and thought it looked great but just wasn’t ready to push out ShotCut and KdenLive from my workflow. Glad they’re still working on it.

[-] clubb@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Thanks, I'll check it out

[-] wormer@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 year ago

Does anyone know how to donate to olive? I can't find it anywhere

[-] QuazarOmega@lemy.lol 1 points 1 year ago

Should be this Patreon account according to their GitHub

[-] Persen@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

I would switch if it had multiline text without those annoying tittles

[-] BrainisfineIthink@lemmy.one 14 points 1 year ago
[-] FQQD@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I get that. It's quite annoying, but I haven't had any other problems than that

[-] Armand1@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Personally I use the free version of Devinci Resolve. Have you used both and how do they compare?

[-] FQQD@feddit.de 11 points 1 year ago

I wouldn't mind using it, but the lack of H264 support on linux really kills that idea

Of course I could export every clip to a different format, but that would require me to** export every clip to a different format** and I'm lazy.

[-] somedaysoon@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Yeah, I liked DaVinci Resolve but that's the sole reason that killed it for me too. I ended up paying $80 for Lightworks when it went on sale, and I love it. It just works.

Kdenlive wasn't quite there for me personally yet in terms of workflow the last time I tried it. I keep checking in on it though, because I know it will get there.

[-] FQQD@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I used Lightworks like 6 years back, has it improved since then? I liked it, but the 720p export limit was a bummer

[-] somedaysoon@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

The free version can still only export 720p, but the "Create license" that I bought on sale exports 4k. I'm not sure on how it differs from 6 years ago, I just started using it like 6 months ago so I can't answer that for you. You could try the free version just to see how it works, and if you think you might like to use it and it's worth paying, wait for a sale on it. I wouldn't have paid the standard price of $160 but for $80 it was worth it to me instead of having to transcode everything before editing.

I will say though, that before Lightworks I used Davinci Resolve and the transition was absolutely seamless. That might be different if you're doing more advanced editing, not sure. I don't do any advanced video editing, very basic things, and I'm learning as I go, so take that into consideration.

The alternatives that I considered were using DR in Windows, but I just can not stand the workflows of Windows. I feel like I'm wading through 3ft of shit whenever I have to use it for something. Or using something like Kdenlive, but felt that wasn't quite as refined as either DR or Lightworks just yet, but I'm sure it will be eventually.

[-] valentino@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago

State when was the last time you tried couz. Mf be saying "last time I tried x" and it turns out it was 5 years ago. FOSS development and new technologies are at its all time high and it won't stop increasing

[-] somedaysoon@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I hear you, I see that happen all the time with peoples outdated opinions on Linux. I tried 6 months ago, I was already using Davinci Resolve then tried the FOSS options, then tried Lightworks and decided to pay for Lightworks.

[-] uis@lemmy.world -2 points 1 year ago

What? x264 is h.264 encoder, it ships with ffmpeg

[-] bobbysq@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Last time I tried the Linux version of Resolve, it wouldn't start up due to it being incompatible with the default AMD drivers. This was years ago, so maybe it works now.

[-] miss_brainfart@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 year ago

How stable is it now? I never felt quite comfortable enough to do more elaborate projects with it.

[-] fakeman_pretendname@feddit.uk 10 points 1 year ago

It's definitely stable enough for doing "real work" on, though the lack of GPU accelerated timeline playback can make some more complex projects a little difficult. I've used it for proper work plenty of times over the years (I survived the Covid lockdowns entirely with paid video editing from home, on Kdenlive, as my normal work was unavailable).

I still frequently save manually with a new filename, due to old version paranoia, but if I'm honest, it's own "it saves every click in an ongoing temp file" sort of thing works great. You lose 2 seconds of work, then restart and restore.

Basic edits are likely to have no crashes at all, wheras ones where you, for example, pan and zoom with keyframes, then speed up, then reverse the footage, then try to re-edit the pan and zoom, might get its keyframes in a twist and crash frequently.

I've heard the Windows version is less stable.

[-] uis@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

GPU acceleration is not a problem of playback, but how playback works

[-] miss_brainfart@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Sounds better than my last experience with it, maybe I'll try it again. But still, not 100% confidence inspiring

[-] MrWafflesNBacon@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

What happened with shotcut?

[-] FQQD@feddit.de 10 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

At least for me, shotcut is really unstable, they're removing features that I liked, old versions that worked previously are buggy ... at least for me, it was a bad experience overall. Hadn't had any of these problems with Kdenlive, so i switched

[-] woelkchen@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Do you use native distribution packages or Flatpak? Distributions packaging applications with changed dependencies from when the developer made that version can cause instability. That's one of the reasons I'm advocating that developers maintain their own Flatpak releases.

[-] hitagi@ani.social 6 points 1 year ago

I tried a few FOSS NLEs and Kdenlive is my favorite. The native one from the Arch repos at least. I know the flatpak or AppImage versions can be problematic sometimes especially when you throw some weird files at it.

[-] FQQD@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I've never been a huge fan of Flatpaks, AppImages, Snaps etc., especially when it comes to interacting with the storage.

I just like to have the binary sitting in my binary folder, at least for "media creation" programs.

[-] kzhe@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

Personally I don't, it's been a while and my usage was never too professional. A quick web search doesn't seem to show anything, though that's probably due to the video editor's obscurity.

[-] aracebo@unilem.org 5 points 1 year ago

One, my sweet Olive. One day it will be your time to shine.

[-] FQQD@feddit.de 2 points 1 year ago

I took a look at it, and it does look really promising! I'm excited to see how it's gonna turn out

[-] einfach_orangensaft@feddit.de 3 points 1 year ago

I use both, because shortcut can make the video shake to the beat of musik

[-] Patrizsche@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

Wow really? What filter is this?

[-] FQQD@feddit.de 1 points 1 year ago

It's a nice feature, but i don't think it looks THAT nice
