This is just an example of the AI-shitshow to come, both in and out of politics. You don't even necessarily have to get away with it, disruptions alone will wreak havoc.

It’s going to be an interesting few years, because you’re definitely right.

I’m also worried about the “parallel construction” problems this could create

ABC cites an odd claim:

Detectives allege that Darien used his Large Language Models, such as OpenAI and Bing chat, to create the recording. The charging document claimed that Darien has a paid OpenAI account, which gives users more features than the free version.

You can't make audio using OpenAI or Bing, just text and images. I really hope they didn't arrest the wrong person based on a hunch and office politics.

It's starting early! I genuinely can't tell if the audio is AI generated or not. How cool will it be here in 7 months when we have a presidential election? How many people are gonna be swayed by fake audio clips? How many people will assume the real shit that candidates have said is just AI generated? "Grab em by the pussy" and "you ain't black" are so outlandish, if those audio clips came out today, I would assume they must be fake

This feels like when we saw headlines about a new virus in Wuhan back in January

January? The news had been coming since November 2019 AFAIK

I hope this gets some serious scrutiny, they better find actual evidence. Would be so easy for the principle and police chief to be friends.

investigative journalism at its best.

[-] Entropywins@lemmy.world 5 points 6 months ago

We are talking about US police, so it's safe to say yes they would do something like that.

This kind of thing is going to ruin so many lives before society learns to adapt to the new normal.

But it's tough because who wouldn't want a school board to err on the side of caution if there was an audio leak of a principle saying worrying racist shit? Or worse, what if someone made one look like a paedo? Every parent want them out before asking questions, just to be safe

How stupid and petty do you have to be to think something like this would work?

[-] Even_Adder@lemmy.dbzer0.com 8 points 6 months ago

Are there many stupid and petty people in education? 🤔

[-] mean_bean279@lemmy.world 7 points 6 months ago

Probably about half. 😅

I’ve worked in education for 12 years and it’s been a shit show the entire time. We even say in education that high school drama carries onto the staff.

Just the start…

This is the best summary I could come up with:

A high school athletic director in Maryland has been charged with using artificial intelligence to impersonate a principal on an audio recording that included racist and antisemitic comments, authorities said on Thursday.

Using cloning technology, Darien forged an audio clip in which it sounded as if the principal was frustrated with Black students and their test-taking abilities, police wrote.

The recording also purported to capture the principal disparaging Jewish individuals and two teachers who “should never have been hired”.

The audio clip quickly spread on social media and had “profound repercussions”, the court documents stated, with the principal being placed on leave.

The recording also triggered a wave of hate-filled messages on social media and an inundation of phone calls to the high school’s front office, police said.

Darien, 31, faces charges that include theft, disrupting school activities, stalking and retaliating against a witness, according to court documents.
