I think AI has its place.
That place isn't shoved down the throat of the consumer.
It's been existing for many years now. Just think of all the image processing going on when you take a picture with your smartphone for example. NPUs have been in smartphones for years (I think Apple had their first NPU in the A11 of the iPhone 8 in like 2017).
Manufacturers simply didn't call it AI back then, and now it's a buzzword. And these "AI" features are getting more and more complex, so notebook chips now need dedicated NPUs to run this stuff quick and efficiently.
I am longing for the trough of disillusionment, is there anyway to speed it up?
Not happening at least for another 2 years.
With smartphones being "good enough" (even in the mid-range), they really need AI-focused marketing to try and push upgrades. Same with PCs and laptops.
Same brother, same.
I'd rather have more/faster cores than the npu.
Or "just" 8 but cheaper.

The whole NPU thing reeks of stagnation.
AMD uses chiplets in their CPUs, you can see it in the picture - they have a CPU bit, a GPU bit and an AI bit.
Much like you can buy SKUs with or without graphics you will be able to buy models with or without AI.
I sure hope so.
Strix Point is a monolithic die APU, though to your point, it's comprised of a variety of IP (CPU, GPU, NPU, IO / SoC functionality) from across the business.
Strix Halo is rumoured to be a multi-chip product.
What is this name, why would they take inspiration from Intel of all people?
Can't stop shooting their own feet. Great product, horrible name. Imagine buying a laptop with this cpu and then someone asks you what processor it has.
You mean Strix Point? It's just a manufacturing codename, like all the Intel Lakes. They are sold under the numerical name still. Also, I always found funny that all intel cpus are lakes in the pcs. The irony.
