I can think of tons of other less painful ways to go than lighting yourself on fire.
Reading the wiki it explains why. To avoid the tortures yes but around the same time the men would go out and fight to the death. In case some of the men were captured the women and childrens bodies were destroyed in the fire so that the captured men were not forced to watch necrophilia.
That's a fucked up logic from a fucked up time.
Probably better than what the invading armies would have done to them
