I open it to prevent the beeping. I'd press stop but that beeps too.

Most (probably) all microwaves can be silenced. Usually by holding the "2" botton for 3 seconds.

Google the brand and/or model number of your microwave they usually can be silenced.

I had read recently that opening the door while it's running triggers an emergency shutoff that is quicker than normal operation. Apparently this is bad for the longevity of the microwave.
