Burning Man attendees had to adapt in real time as rain turned their desert oasis into a muddy pit

Calling this a disaster takes away from actual disasters. It rained. Sure that's unusual and undoubtedly caused by climate change but let's not sensationalize what happened.

All the metalheads in Wacken: "First time?"

Oh no, people who could afford about $2k just for tickets/car pass and camping site were inconvenienced for a few days. Surely they will come home changed and will now dedicate their lives to fighting climate change.

If you want to do weird drugs and roll around in the mud, do it the proper way with your own friends at a remote campsite of your choosing.

Or do what quite a lot of Americans seem to do which is to come to the UK and go to Glastonbury, where mud is guaranteed. And it's fine.

From all the news and jokes I thought it was at least serious (like the Love Parade crush, or the storm at Pukkelpop) But it was just muddy?

Shit I hope they learn something but I'm not holding my breath.

It's hilarious to think about how the same privileged white liberals who had the police beat climate protesters got flooded for a few days, sure.

But facts are facts. The playa is one of the most hostile places to human life on the entire Earth. Every person who walks on that ground is prepared for Mother Nature to fuck them up. And they're rich white liberals so they come prepped with everything they need to fuck Nature right back.

Again, fun to think about the Burners being miserable. But they really just took a ton of drugs, had a ton of sex, and came back with a great story to tell their less fortunate privileged white friends.

I'd be a bit hesitant to call Burning Man attendees liberals. It's a big crowd and there are plenty of right-wing types there

I'm using "liberal" in the sense socialists use "liberal" - someone who supports corporate capitalism but pretends waving a rainbow flag puts them on the left, someone who pays lip service to "equality" while shunning the radical change necessary for genuine equality.

Liberals are right wing capitalists. Republicans, Libertarians, and Democrats are all liberals. And I think that covers 99% of Burning Man attendees. The actual progressives and countercultures long since moved on.

Might be more useful to try and draw people in with a positive approach.

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
