If Wormtongue didn't want me to have the orb, then why did he throw it at me? Everyone knows that orbs are free if you find them on the ground, Gandalf is just jealous the ents like me more and I have all the good leaf.
To be fair, he did manage to mind read Sauron without revealing anything back, so Pippin does seem to have quite a lot of orb pondering talent.
