I built a system around a 3U chassis, then tried to stuff a GPU in the box and couldn't close the lid. I got a 4U chassis and rebuilt the system, but I still have the 3U and I'm thinking about filling it back out so I have a failover for Proxmox. Is there a GPU I should consider or just stick with the integrated graphics? I'm currently only using the GPU for Steam remote play using pass-though to a Windows VM, but Jellyfin, Frigate, Immich are on my to-do list.

Can you just get a pcie extender and mount it sideways?

That's a thing a lot of low-profile systems do that need to stuff tall cards into them.

Worth checking, though the 3U isn't super-spacious inside

I've seen people stuff GPUs in 1 and 2u cases so you probably could depending on how deep the case is/how the internal layout is and if you can find somewhere safe to stuff it.

"find somewhere to stuff it" instructions unclear....

If it’s a backup server why not build a system around an CPU with an integrated GPU? Some of the APUs from AMD aren’t half bad.

Particularly if it’s just your backup… and you can live without games/video/acceleration while you repair your primary?

That's probably the plan, though I see an Intel a380 low-profile for all of $100 that might be useful for some encode/decode tasks

Look at workstation cards. Things like the T1000 for example.

You could look into low profile GPUs. Off the top of my head, the 3050 is probably the strongest of those, unless you're willing to look into the A-class cards
