Good, it serves them right for the way they treat their customers. I hope every one of their games gets leaked early.

[-] Biskii@lemmy.dbzer0.com 38 points 1 month ago

They typically do in my experience

[-] sub_ubi@lemmy.ml 18 points 1 month ago

yup, i was active in the n64 days and we enjoyed early roms :)

[-] Biskii@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 1 month ago

That's awesome, I didn't know it went that far back

stealing from nintendo is a long running tradition

[-] Biskii@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 month ago

Sorry, I meant the early leaked copies specifically

[-] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 15 points 1 month ago

Unpopular opinion: These leaks are probably the reason for Nintendo being so ruthless on emulators.

[-] Chewy7324@discuss.tchncs.de 23 points 1 month ago

It's difficult to know how much of a difference it makes, but I also think it's at least a reason. Given Nintendo is also going after sites like Vimm's Lair, which does not host recent consoles ROMs, it's not the only reason.

[-] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 6 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Certainly not. But with Vimm's lair you could argue that it's definetly illegal, while emulation is generally considered legal.

[-] ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

There's tons of illegal things that people do every single day that the law turns a blind eye to because reality is complicated. Piracy of games not being sold by the company anymore is certainly by-the-books illegal, but everyone obviously recognizes that it's an entirely harmless "crime". Like smoking weed in illegal states. Everyone knows it's bullshit, so if you defend locking people up for a few grams of weed you're a bootlicker.

[-] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

To be clear: I agree that both weed and emulation is a victimless "crime" and shouldn't be prosecuted. However, I don't think corporate lawyers and judges agree with us on this point.

Edit: also, Nintendo usually gets what they want by threatening to go to court without actually doing so. So the actual legality doesn't actually matter too much. Certainly doesn't when it comes to Switch emulators shutting down.

[-] ProgrammingSocks@pawb.social 2 points 1 month ago

You're right. I just hate corporate bullies.

[-] jjlinux@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 month ago

Agreed, very unpopular and underwhelming opinion.

Remember: It's always ethically okay pirating a Nintendo game

[-] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 month ago

At this point, I think it's gone from "ethically okay" to "mandatory".

It's like downloading Metallica's newest album. Sure, I might never listen to it, but it's the principle.

Has Nintendo ever had the entire rom of a major game leak before it was released?

[-] FortifiedAttack@hexbear.net 43 points 1 month ago

Happened with Tears of the Kingdom too iirc.

[-] Deello@lemm.ee 21 points 1 month ago
[-] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 12 points 1 month ago

Skyward Sword too, going back to the Wii era. That was probably just someone at a games store dumping the disc when it was shipped to them before they could legally sell it though.

[-] 007ace@lemm.ee 7 points 1 month ago

And Metroid dread. I finished that one the weekend before it came out. Then bought the collectors tin.

[-] butter@midwest.social 2 points 1 month ago

One of the gen 9 pokemon games. I think violet?

I was out with my wife's family coordinating with my brother by text trying to get it downloaded.

[-] riseuppikmin@hexbear.net 21 points 1 month ago

In case this was asked in earnest, yes- it happens all the time. Nintendo releases have been notoriously leaky for about 3 years now

[-] SomethingBurger@jlai.lu 7 points 1 month ago

Not quite the same but there was a working GBA emulator before the console released.

[-] cccc0@sh.itjust.works 16 points 1 month ago
[-] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 10 points 1 month ago

Does it run on ryujinx? 🤣

[-] Localhorst86@feddit.org 20 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

I wouldnt know

Spoiler(but yes)

[-] cyberpunk007@lemmy.ca 7 points 1 month ago

Well, it works fine on the steam deck.

[-] Appoxo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 1 month ago

Probably very likely.

[-] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 9 points 1 month ago

Oh no! It says there might be early spoilers! Yikes!

Nothing for me to do but go download the ROM and play it early, then. I have no choice.

[-] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago

With ho wierdly consistent these leaks are now.
I doubt Nintendo is smart enough to use that as a biz strategy, by like, there has to be some intention behind this from on an insider.

[-] Mandy@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 weeks ago

utterly revolting!!

Where did these leak so i know to stay away from those parts of the internet.

[-] Xianshi@lemm.ee 1 points 3 weeks ago

Not sure but there has been a torrent of leaks as of late.

[-] VintageGenious@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago
[-] Prunebutt@slrpnk.net 15 points 1 month ago

The first gen switch is really easy to hack. Once someone in the supply-line gets their hands on a cartridge, it's already online.

[-] BonerMan@ani.social 1 points 1 month ago

Hope more comes.
