I have a samsung A22 which is not supported by any of the foss roms i would like to try, so i started to debloat my phone and logout from google, removing as much propietary software as i can from my phone and replacing by foss alternatives. The only thintg i didnt manage to do is removing google services as i live in a country where foss options of maps apps doesnt work very well unfortunately so I have to stick with google maps. I tried Gmaps WV but it still needs google play services to work. I also added the micro G repository but I cant see the option to install it, is it possible?

Of course it's possible. I'm using MicroG on a Samsung Z Fold 3 right now so that I can watch YouTube ReVanced.

(Curious: what makes you think that it wouldn't be? Samsung phones run on Android too.)

I can confirm as another Samsung user without root.

How? Id really like to know how to do it

[-] Xirup@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 year ago

I honestly don't know, I didn't do it manually, I only use F-Droid and 0 Google services and "microG" magically appeared among my installed apps inside F-Droid.

How did you do it?

[-] doomkernel@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 year ago

Yes its possible. Just follow the official installation guide. You'll need to remove any google service of the phone

Its weird because i tried installing them using the repository and it does not let me install them, i tried downloading the apk as suggested in the guide, but it says it wont install it because the package is not valid

Weird. Are you using F-Droid? I've download mine using the F-Droid repo. Worked like a charm. Maybe you've got a different version installed or something?

[-] 3yiyo3@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Yeah, Im f-droid and the MicroG repo, however when I find the app on fdroid it doesnt let me install it in fact i cant even see the install button, as shown in this pic:

It's possible to install in stock rom? Without signature spoofing it can work?

[-] MasterBuilder@lemmy.one 3 points 1 year ago

Nope, except if you root with magisk, there is a module that takes care of it for you, complete with spoofing.

[-] Skimmer@lemmy.zip 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I don't think you can install microG in this case unfortunately, since 1: the lack of signature spoofing by your stock OS, and 2: the signatures/package name microG uses have already been used by the official Google Play Services in this case, so I don't believe Android will let you re-use them for microG.

I would just recommend uninstalling any Google apps and Samsung bloatware and any other garbage that you can through ADB in this case if you haven't yet. It can be a bit hacky and isn't perfect, but its definitely the best option you have since you're unable to install any custom OS.

I tried Gmaps WV but it still needs google play services to work.

GMaps WV definitely doesn't need Google Play Services to work FYI, though nowadays its developer recommends just using Google Maps with uBlock Origin in incognito in a browser like Mull instead anyways.

Thank you for the in dept reply. Its a shame to be completely unable to use MicroG :(

[-] MasterBuilder@lemmy.one 2 points 1 year ago

Look for a GSI ROM. They generally work on any device that came out with Android 10 or newer.

In my case, someone did the work of overcoming Knox with their own ROM, etc. Right now my galaxy tab 2019 has LineageOS 20 and a microg setup through magisk. It supplies the spoof fix systemlessly. You might be able to use the same ROM, which is a GSI by Andy Yan.

[-] 3yiyo3@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

I would but Im still not that tech savy so im afraid to brick my device

[-] MotherFlocker@jlai.lu 2 points 1 year ago

Nope. You'll still need a ROM with Sig spoof support.

Some suggests rooting and doing extra stuff but there is high chance of something not working right.

[-] 3yiyo3@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 year ago

Its a shame i didnt manage to find a single rom with support for my samsung a22 device. I wanted to use /e/Os or graphene, but none of them support my model :/

[-] MotherFlocker@jlai.lu 2 points 1 year ago

Maybe you can use your existing phone for google stuff only, and get another cheap phone for doing anything else, or try doing as many things as possible on a computer.

Also rooting is dangerous (it opens door for exploits and hacking) and things may go wrong (as I also used to f**k things .)

I guess thats the way that i have to take, thank you for your reply
