Bummer that I don't understand German. I could always use another Linux community in my feed!

You figured out Linux - German's not that much harder lol

I still can't believe antibabypillen is a real German word for exactly what you think it is—birth control pills.

I wonder if English has any words that people who have it as a second language find hilarious for similar reasons, and if so what they are…

Isn't schadenfreude used in English?

Yes, it's a German word we just took and now it's in English dictionaries. I am speaking of German words that will not show up in English dictionaries, even if they do look a lot like kind-of-English in the case of "antibabypillen".

German is my main language and yes, every time I see one of those words is somewhat funny. Its similar to Japanese using German words too. They love German. :D Interestingly there is an entire article and lists on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_German_expressions_in_English

Shoplifter is the one I always find funny.

You could use a translation tool, for something that looks interesting to you. At least Firefox makes this easy, with its builtin translation functionality (without Google as far as I understand, and I think local/offline only, but can be wrong). Firefox is my main way to interact with Lemmy:

Directly in the addressbar for non native languages:

Or through menu:

BTW I just saw the link that describes it: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/website-translation

Note: Unlike other browsers that rely on cloud services, Firefox keeps your data safe on your device. There's no privacy risk of sending text to third parties for analysis because translation happens on your device, not externally.

One more reason to use Firefox.

Edit: I made an entire post about this subject. There is a bit more to it: https://beehaw.org/post/18172275

Thanks for sharing!

I looked a few times to find a good and active German community, but most are or was not. Maybe that's the reason why the clients had a hard time finding those. I will follow them and see how it goes. Thanks for the recommendation.
