Summary

CBS has moved to dismiss Donald Trump’s $20 billion lawsuit over a 60 Minutes interview with Kamala Harris, calling it an attack on the First Amendment.

Trump alleges CBS edited the interview to harm him politically, citing “voter interference.” CBS attorneys argue the lawsuit seeks to punish “constitutionally protected editorial judgments” and is “without basis in law or fact.”

If not dismissed, CBS wants it moved to New York, where its headquarters is located.

The move comes as a surprise because CBS had considered settling to avoid delaying its $8 billion merger with Skydance Media, which requires regulatory approval.

CBS helped elect this clown. I distinctly recall in 2015 CBS cutting away from live Hillary Clinton rallies in the middle of her speech to instead go live to Trump’s empty podium before he even came out on stage.

I have no sympathy for what this administration does to the oligarchs legacy media corps now. And fuck Washington Post especially

[-] Montreal_Metro@lemmy.ca 42 points 1 year ago

Jeff Bezos to be specific. WP is basically just a shell now.

I distinctly recall in 2015 CBS cutting away from live Hillary Clinton rallies in the middle of her speech to instead go live to Trump’s empty podium before he even came out on stage.

Yeah, but he's a MAN. A bigly important BUSINESS man, too, no less. So obviously it's much more important to get all ready to hear what he is going to say, as opposed to broadcasting some mere woman - who everyone is saying is incredibly shrill and omg, that laugh [1], amirite? - and any of her so-called ideas.

/s, just in case anyone thinks that real....

[1] If anyone needs evidence of just how skewed coverage is of Hillary (and Kamala) vs. little d, examining how they talk about their laugh is instructive. I mean, I'm not sure I've ever seen donnie ever have what looks like a genuine human emotion when it comes to humor. He does that weird grimace when he or someone else is punching down on someone. But have you ever seen the guy laugh at a joke or something that is not mean-spirited? The guy seems like he's just very unhappy, and I find that far more weird than anything about Hillary or Kamala's laugh. I think a lot of weak men hear a woman laughing and assume it's AT THEM, so that's why there was so much time spent on talking about it...

I don't think they really care whether they're dealing with a man or woman. They happily cut Bernie out of coverage as well in the primaries to favor Clinton.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I guess that's true, but they then proceeded to constantly dunk on Hillary and often for the most stupid of reasons: emails, Benghazi, her laugh, having hot sauce, she was obviously at death's door, etc.

I mean, if they kneecapped Bernie so they got a more centrist candidate, they then started playing with fire by employing the bothsiderist nonsense. In many cases, it was not even bothsiderist, it was tipping the scales in favor of little d, whether it's because they wanted their horse race or because their corporate masters wanted tax cuts. In any case, I am sure more than a few knew exactly what they were doing. And I'm sure more than a few of them knew, even then, just how dangerous and flawed someone like little d is.

[-] newthrowaway20@lemmy.world 68 points 1 year ago

CBS realized if they gave in, Trump had no plans of stopping attacks whatsoever. So if you're gonna get attacked anyways, you might as well fight back .

[-] fan0m@lemmy.world 19 points 1 year ago

This is the way

[-] Eatspancakes84@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Corporations and their owners thought that Trump would boost the stock market through tax cuts. Instead the market is tanking due to his moronic tariffs and Russia-appeasement strategy. Now that it’s clear he won’t be making them money they have rediscovered their “morals”.

[-] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

I hope this is true. I've always hoped that the one think that might save us is MAGA's virtuosic incompetence.

[-] frezik@midwest.social 2 points 1 year ago

Maybe this time.

The policies of the Nazi party took a while to fully implement. Even after the Enabling Act, it took a while before anyone felt it. With each dumb policy, fascists need to double down on blaming outside actors. They have to do this, because this is the only way they can cover for their failures.

The problem this time is they are implementing three years of policy changes per week. It happened too fast, and their attempts to blame others aren't taking root.

More generally, people should be more aware of how things are different in this regime compared to 1930s Germany. The comparison is obvious, but we'll miss opportunities if we think everything is the same.

[-] QuarterSwede@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

Yeah, this is the only logical move they have. Good to see someone still has ethical brains in business these days.

[-] BossDj@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

I hope everyone dealing with him recognizes this and stops trying to deal with him

[-] Auntievenim@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

No no, don't worry. They're still going to work for him and do his bidding, they're just not going to be bullied into paying him $20billion over a factually imaginary grievance. They'll get the case thrown and then issue a public apology for having to defend themselves and then immediately hardline into defending the administration. Tale as old as time.

This is of course assuming the admin doesn't simply revoke their broadcast license before they get the chance to bend back over.

[-] conditional_soup@lemm.ee 11 points 1 year ago

Yeah, I recently read a Guardian article about how the crackdown on non-violent protestors in the UK is leading climate activists to a little more, uh, active forms of protest. If you're going to jail for five years anyway, you might as well make it count.

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

I'm sure it works the same way with the mafia. I doubt companies that pay extortion to the mafia only do a one-time payment.

The can't legally make allowing the merger to be a conditionon a settlement agreement. So there'd be nothing to keep his petty ass from stopping it either way.

They're greedy and would do anything for the merger, but Trump doesn't honor his deals.

[-] meowmeowbeanz@sopuli.xyz 47 points 1 year ago

Demanding $20 billion for editorial discretion? This lawsuit screams desperation, not justice.

😺😺😺🐱

[-] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 39 points 1 year ago

It screams judicial intimidation and abuse. How does he claim $20 billion in damages when he WON the fucking election? Hes been in office for less than 3 months, and he's already made more than that from his various scams.

[-] SynopsisTantilize@lemm.ee 30 points 1 year ago

Maybe if ya boy Reagan didn't kill the news fairness act we wouldn't fucking be here at all. Fuck Regan. Fuck Nixon. And fuck Trump.

'comes out swinging' is any reaction that's not giving up and paying 20 billion to the class bully?

[-] A_Random_Idiot@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

'comes out swinging' is any reaction thats not paying the legalized bribe that is the demanded settlement when trump files a bullshit lawsuit against you, so you can pay him to keep access.

It's not about being legal or not. They do illegal shit all the time

[-] Veedem@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

Interesting signs when corporations are starting to push back. Glad to see a news organization being at the front of the charge.

[-] Murdeth@lemmy.world 15 points 1 year ago

The motivation is still about money. It's a corporation.

[-] Hawke@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

In the short term, the motivation doesn’t matter as long as they’re on the right side.

It means you can’t trust them, but motivation is not the issue.

My enemy's enemy...

[-] yukichigai@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 1 year ago

Oh no doubt, but they thought they could appease him somehow. Now they're realizing that once you're on his list there's no getting back in his good graces. Peace was never an option.

Every single trump voter and supporter should drink a gallon of methanol. It’ll protect them from measles.

[-] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 11 points 1 year ago

sadly, if we told them the "dems definitely don't want you to drink methanol, because it's bad for you", there'd be some who'd do it out of spite. this is literally what's happening with vaccines, but one's mental blindness leading to physical blindness has some poetry to it.

[-] captainlezbian@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Methanol increases sex hormone production and fertility. It's Elon's secret that the left is hiding from you. But you gotta build it up like those people do with hydrogen peroxide.

Actually we might just loudly decaying the h2o2 people. It's just water with more oxygen, what could go wrong

Just imagine if something deadlier than the covid virus infiltrated this country. And somebody developed a vaccine for it and these idiots wouldn't take it.

Oh wait, has anybody heard about what's happening in the Congo lately? 😒

[-] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

the problem is exactly what we see with measles.

  1. children who have no choice are the ones who suffer the consequences
  2. because most vaccines cannot be 100% effective (e.g., I got 3 extra MMR shots and I still don't have detectable measles antibody levels despite being fully immunocompetent), they do rely on herd immunity protecting those who don't mount full responses to the shots.

The thing about public health is that it's public interest over personal choices. In a functioning free society those personal choices would still align with public interest based on the understanding of societal good. So the antagonism is totally artificial.

Guess ABC is having briber's remorse and CBS got wise.

[-] Sandbag@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Huh, can I have some clarification on this, guess I'm out of the loop.

[-] Brown5500@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

ABC agreed to settle a defamation lawsuit that they could have easily won. Apparently, they thought it would be better to just give Trump money than it would be to piss him off by fighting it.

[-] barneypiccolo@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

He will never let up on any mainstream media outlet until they are covering the news the way his favorite Conservative Propaganda Machine mouthpieces do.

[-] notsoshaihulud@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

This is the thing that distinguishes the intellect of orbán and trump. Orbán developed what he officially named "the system of national collaboration" with an unofficial motto of "those with us will thrive [and those who are against us will struggle]". So initially they made sure that it was a lucrative thing to align with the system making it very inconvenient for systematic resistance to emerge. Trump seems to be failing this idea already in the acute phase: maintaining pressure even when companies realign with him makes it much more convenient to push back straight up...

[-] magnetosphere@fedia.io 3 points 1 year ago

Good for them - in this one particular situation
