Are those MREs? My face literally scrunched up thinking about tearing one of those little foil pouches open and squeezing out whatever is inside to become my lunch for the day.
I think it's some powder you mix with water and heat up.

So like those somehow shittier MREs you can get at Bass Pro Shop, lovely.
Also I say this as someone who eats expired MREs do you know how shitty it has to be for me to acknowledge that?
Reheated meals are great. Sometimes they're even better the next day!
