I did a factory reset on my Roku several months ago and it works more or less like it would normally. Can’t set themes, which is the only big lack, but most of the important settings are still available. I know I can change the inputs and settings and stuff on it, though, because the hdmi1 is classed to PlayStation and 4 to computer.

I just did a factory reset and never connected to the internet. You can’t disconnect it from the internet without a reset, tho, or you’ll get “not connected” messages frequently, which I assume is what you are talking about.

Fun thing about that video: laughter is a social signal.

Most people when they watch or read funny things alone will not laugh nearly as much (if at all) as when they see the same thing in a social setting, even if they are just as amused by it.

Because laughter is a signal that we get the joke (In a social setting where the laughter reaction is appropriate).

That’s why there are more nuanced labels, like “this caused a sharp exhalation through my nose” or “I chuckled in public and people are looking at me”. And we mostly all recognize the significance of that, because it’s rare we bust a gut solo in inappropriate settings, too.

But you can’t say “that’s really amusing” or similar, even when it is, because that’s hurtful to people as it’s phrasing often used derisively. So we pretend to have extreme reactions for hyperbolic reasons, I guess, and this is what happens.

Humans are really fascinating context dependent entities.

I misunderstood this very much until I read your other comment and realized the guys name is John Hurt.

Thought you were saying it was a painful performance or mis-cast or something :p

That Lana tried cociane one did not do well on any app. Did it do well in your tests?

I’m start with that one.

Wefwef, memmy, liftoff, voyager got zero from it, just blank.

Mlem, thunder - provide link

Lemmios - spins loading

Avalon (which I didn’t know existed until today!) gives a fail to load message.

Cheer was most consistent.

Wefwef, memmy, liftoff, voyager, thunder, and Avalon played and looped perfectly.

Lemmios and Mlem failed and provided a link.

Caville was kinda all over the place

Wefwe, liftoff, voyager, and Avalon* all showed it and looped it. Avalon required being clicked but then functioned the same.

Mlem, memmy, Lemmios all showed the thumb but it was a still and opened a still.

Thunder was a dud and showed nothing.

If you ever need other, or more detailed, testing, lmk (I have an iPhone, older Samsung tablet, and an android phone from about 3 years ago). There’s a few iOS apps I tend not to keep/use because they are ad-driven or paid (there’s a place for that ofc, I’m just not it) and I can download them to test on if desired, but they aren’t part of my normal lineup, only die-hards of that particular dev tend to use them.

I’m willing to do it rigorously as well, with more detailed info. I did a quick check today, but I’m happy to contribute what I can to finding good systems!

Yeah, guy I know isn’t crazy about work, and was a sysadmin (now security). Burned right out. He bought the Plex lifetime for me, though, because I enjoy curating the library and he likes free streaming (and can afford it which I really can’t).

He mostly just answers questions for me (which is challenging because I’m really good at asking the questions that lead me to fully understanding, and those tend to be fairly specific) and explains things I don’t understand when possible. He doesn’t do any self-hosting (other than a coax-based tv channel that runs my Plex and nothing else), preferring to leave to to me to handle… says it’s too much work and too expensive to be worth it, even knowing fully the alternatives (ofc thinking like a sysadmin, he’s thinking raid5 and full servers and stuff whereas I just have an old-ish dedicated pc for that lol.)

Plus side, I’m learning a lot. Downside, learning this stuff while not having a strong tech foundation is hard!

My next foray is into automating my *arr, and setting up self-hosts for things like photos, comics, games, maaaaaaybe Lemmy, and music (Plex does ok with music tho, so maybe just adding last.fm to it will do the job. I don’t listen to music; the need is not my own, so I need something robust and host-hands-off)

He does help me with a few things I really don’t understand though, like complex tunnel/router configuration, setting up pihole (I can do that myself now) and hosting my home vpn (I could probably do this, but he does it for me for now with a custom domain) but it’s almost the exact opposite of what you described as the dynamic lol

Maybe I should be “that girl”, but I’d be tempted to snoop. Very very tempted. “Don’t trust me with your data” level of tempted.

I hate Amazon for this, and won’t use their apps or pages if I can avoid it (including the amazingly brief foray into the Amazon App Store years ago which only served ads from Amazon domains)

Because so much of the world runs off Amazon I really can’t block that domain effectively without breaking large portions of the internet. Tho now that I’m not using Amazon actively for anything, the broken-ness might be fine. Guess we’ll find out!

I’m not, I made that mistake already. I really liked the dark alliance games on console.

I have the first 2 baldurs gate games on console also, ps4 specifically, because I thought they were the dark alliance games :) I was disappointed. They don’t play well on console.

I lost all my games when I swapped to Linux.

But that’s because it was a decade ago, and I was way too lazy to figure out why wine wouldn’t work, tho I don’t really pc game anyway and these were mostly older games, even then. Small loss.

I know there’s a lot of stuff either native dev or ported/cracked for Linux, just never really spent the time to look into it.

The only thing that’s going to cause problems for me now is idk how Linux handles vr. I assume not terribly well, since none (almost none?) of it is native dev. I’m looking to move away from consoles now that they are moving away from physical media (no point collecting if there’s nothing to collect), so Linux being more robust is great! But vr maybe my stick point. Depends how well developed it gets I guess.

I do already self host a media server and run a vpn, pihole, etc. but don’t know anything deeper than that, and I want to have my setup done properly so I don’t have to move or redo anything later.

I’ll do some digging through and see if any of them are good fits, thank you :)
