Using the Sync app (on Android anyway), you can hit the settings button while browsing posts, and under settings there's an option right there to hide read posts.

On the web, if you click on your username in the top right and go to settings, there is an option "show read posts". By default I think this is turned on - uncheck the box to turn it off. For a while, this wasn't working, but it seems to have been fixed along the way.

I've always loved being scratched (and bitten, slapped, whipped, etc - I just love pain). My wife scratching her nails up and down my arms can send me to another world.

If you're just looking to save a click, you can just go into your settings (click on your username in the top right and choose settings) and check the 'auto-expand pictures' box.

If you want to improve the overall experience, there are a number of options that I think will work with any browser you like. Personally, I use Firefox. I then add the Tampermonkey user scripting extension, with the LemmyTools and lemmy-keyboard-navigation scripts. Plus the ImagusMod extension which displays full images and videos on mouseovers.
