As of 20 February 2024, all girls aged 12 in Kosovo* are eligible to receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for lifelong protection from cervical cancer. To comprehensively roll out the vaccine, Pristina health authorities launched a vaccination campaign at schools aiming to reach over 12 000 girls in 2024; 116 doses have already been administered during the first 2 days of the campaign. While most of these girls will be vaccinated in schools, health workers will also go door-to-door to reach girls from minority Roma, Ashkali, and Egyptian communities, who may have less contact with health and education systems.

The Netherlands has the fourth lowest incarceration rate in the WHO European Region – with health policies which strive to provide necessary care to all people living in prisons, leaving no one behind. Currently, the country is taking steps to tackle the major challenge of mental health disorders – the most prevalent health condition in detention facilities. This worrying issue is relevant for the whole Region, and the Netherlands is working on several collaborative projects with WHO/Europe to address this.

The World Bank-financed Gambia Essential Health Services Strengthening Project implemented an innovative approach by conducting a simultaneous mass registration of both birth certificates and national health insurance memberships. Between August 1, 2022, and February 28, 2023, more than half of the population was registered and provided with a unique national identification number.
