It's almost like Lemmy is just another social media site with the same types of people as every other social media site. Regardless of how seemingly a lot of Lemmy users view themselves and Lemmy as a whole.

That banner wasn't actually there in real life

Nah, brad pitt absolutely does not look like he is 35. He may look very good for his age, but not that good.

Your perception of what a 35 year old should look like may have changed as you also aged though.

I get the sense that it's really not about people having leftist or non American points of views removed, but that people are sick of the extreme shit they post and their attitudes. And it's seemingly entire instances dedicated to being that extreme, not just some individual users.

Personally though, since users have the tools now to block instances, I don't think there's really as much of a need to defederate unless the instance is specifically doing something more than just posting their views. So I agree with you there. Except that having to go out of your way to block stuff like that makes for an experience that isn't always great. And for me it's been something that doesn't really make me want to participate or use the platform much.

I find it's usually best to just avoid any social media around major and divisive news events like this. Specifically where people are allowed to comment and express their opinions. Everyone just gets more extreme in their views, are convinced they are absolutely right, and there is never any room for nuance.

Because there are more Republicans in the house right now and they didn't vote for him.

It's just fanboys being fanboys. Doesn't really matter what brand it is. I just think there happens to be many many more apple fanboys than there are for other brands.

Yea, it is definitely a turn off. A lot of people on lemmy are not just passionate about what they believe, they are basically evangelical about it to the point that they seem like they need to not only convince everyone how right they are, but be assholes to anyone who disagrees. Whether it's political, or about software, or whatever.

If I remember correctly they got bought out by an analytics company at some point. So you know, ads and data collection.

You weren't aware he had a guest spot on an episode of voyager? Well, then yes, really.

Personally I am fine using the tools available to me right now to filter and block things I do not want to see. And I assume with the upcoming personal ability to block entire instances, the brigading issue will resolve itself too. So in that regard, keeping them federated or not won't make much of a difference.

However... The Kremlin propaganda stuff you talk about seems to be quite prevalent. And while they may not all choose to actively brigade, when they show up in thread comments, they tend to completely dominate the thread and specifically all seem to post very similar things. And while I have seen plenty of levelheaded comments from their users, i have also seen a ton of trolling as well.

So again I don't know if defederation is the solution. I think there's a place for discussion of people with differing opinions, and curating a completely safe space doesn't do anyone any real favors. But when interaction goes beyond polite discourse it just breeds hostility and makes places toxic. And at the very least, some of their views and the way they choose to interact with others has been creating a feeling of toxicity to the point that I have seen many many users sick of that instance and to the point that posts like these seemingly need to be made.

I'm enjoying it so far. It doesn't have the same user base or niche communities of reddit yet, so for now I'm just doing more general browsing. There just doesn't seem to be enough of a diverse set of interest yet. So at first it was a ton of posts about sync, currently it's a ton of posts about LTT. And it's just full of memes. Definitely could use a wider range of topics and interests.

That said there are a couple of really obnoxious instances that are highly political and as much as I am trying to avoid that, the users of those instances seem to dominate any thread even remotely political. It's quite annoying.
