"Install Gentoo" is a meme, not life advice. With Gentoo, the installation process gives you good insight in to the internals of Linux systems and compiling (almost) everything from source is interesting, but won't produce noticeable benefits for average users. Especially since updates take some time, what with compiling the programs again. Gentoo is a great distro with a fantastic package manager, but unless you're an enthusiast or a serious hobbyist, Don't Install Gentoo.

I'm reading through The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien. It's decent book, but but can be pretty heavy at times. This is my second time reading it.

I'm not even all that familiar with the games, but the casting seems really off.

The King in Yellow is great. Doesn't get the attention it deserves.

I don't. When I'm clearly not enjoying a book and don't feel like finishing it, I stop and move on. Unless I have a pressing reason, I see no point in pushing myself to do something I hate. Reading is for me is fun and interesting, it is not something I do to torture myself. Sometimes it's hard to "give up" on a book, but in the end life is too short.

Do what you enjoy the way that works for you, there are no rules.

The first time I installed Debian on my desktop I didn't do my homework properly. This was a long time ago. It didn't take long for me to realize just how out of date many packages were and that was a deal breaker. I have since used Debian successfully in different contexts, because I knew what to expect. I still wouldn't install Debian stable on my desktop because I prefer to have a more up to date environment. Might try Debian sid one of these days though. But yeah, Debian, great distro, but you need to know what you're getting in to.

Some things will never be ok. Some things you don't ever want to be ok with. But this too shall pass.

A friend of mine gave me the DVD as a joke. Joke's on him though, it's a fun film!

Yes, Wine and Proton are great and they do actually solve a lot of issues with linux gaming. I don't exactly begrudge anyone for choosing to go that route because linux is complicated. But I do wish we'd talk more about native linux gaming and didn't always default to Proton. Valve has done wonders for gaming on linux, but I am not fan of Steam and their DRM policies.

I really appreciate programs like Bottles these days. Back in 2006 or so I beat Deus Ex on Wine and setting it up was a hassle. Today I'm amazed it was even possible back then.

OpenMandriva recently released a rolling release version of their distro. It's a small project, but I'm personally looking at it as an alternative for Fedora.

I actually had to install ungoogled-chromium to change my email on PayPal. No other browser would work, it was weird. That's the only instance I can remember where I've had to try Chrome. Otherwise I FireFox has worked fine. Wonder what happened there.
