In most cases it's just too annoying of a process to get on the list. But I understand why the invidious team prefers to vet instances rather then have something like a beacon system that auto populates all consenting instances.

Appreciate the info.

It seems absurd to me that a third party online service is required for a hardware key to work in the first place. I figured it would be authenticating strictly between the locked service and the user.

How are you handling displays and keyboard/mouse? Also what VM software?

[-] brownmustardminion@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 months ago

I haven’t. I doubt it would solve all of the problems I experience.

Anybody downvoting me can share their experience running protools with multiple hardware fader interfaces and 18 input DAW interface, pci SDI cards, and 6 separate display monitors.

Adobe software, Davinci Resolve, 3ds Max and its 20 plugins. None of these work or work seamlessly in Linux.

I can’t even get my surround sound to work properly in Ubuntu without having to manually adjust multiple convoluted conf files.

That’s the truth. I love Linux. I use Debian and Ubuntu on a bunch of servers I run. But fanboys need to stop deluding themselves into thinking it’s easy or even worthwhile to use Linux in lieu of Windows for anything and everything. I would be ecstatic if that changed.

The issue with soldering I was trying to convey is that it isn’t an ideal process to make connections “in the field”, aka in a tight corner or behind a cabinet. A proper connection is solid, but it’s not feasible to make a proper connection if you’re upside down under a cabinet or standing at the top of a ladder.

When you detect a compromised account you could put a freeze or lock on it. If there are that many compromised logins that constant account swapping is an issue then twitch needs to overhaul their account security.

I have not. I try to avoid apps if I can.

In my extensive experience, use Zooz zen series for the bulk of your switches. Buy inovelli for special switches such as by your front door or anywhere you might want the use of the LED indicator strip and scenes.

Majority of other smart switches will give you issues with dimming flicker. Trust me, I’ve bought thousands of dollars of smart switches. Zooz and Inovelli are great choices.

My network is currently setup with wireguard. I have a VPS operating as a hub within a hub and spoke (or is it hub and wheel?) configuration. This has worked great with the exception that all traffic passes through the VPS. The benefit of a mesh network is that I can directly connect clients and data does not have to flow through an intermediary VPS.

Funny you mention that. I was about to make a post about Nebula earlier. I learned about it through YouTuber apalrd a few months back and it seems perfect. I’m still trying to understand some of the complexities when utilizing a service that requires circumventing the mesh network for public access such as Nextcloud. I’ll probably make a post about this after I’ve done some more research. I think there’s some good discussion to be had about such a setup.

I appreciate your insight. That’s good to know. My journey into self hosting started with searching for alternatives to google products so I’m naturally hesitant to touch anything under their umbrella.

So I selfhost a number of servers in various locations and utilize a DigitalOcean VPS as a hub/gateway to transmit data between these nodes.

I have a consistent issue when running large backups or transfers in which DigitalOcean flags my server for a DDOS attack and sends traffic to a black hole for 3-4 hours.

Customer support has been the absolute worst and does fuck all to help remedy the situation in any way. These events have been consistent over the past 8 months.

Does anybody have recommendations for a solid VPS provider?

Price isn’t too much of a factor. I was running a $8/month server but I don’t mind something more expensive if the company has a good reputation for reliability and privacy.

As mentioned, I primarily use a VPS as a gateway/hub for file transfer services. I’m also hoping to spin up another VPS for static websites.

Some background:

  • have a poweredge r320 on battery backup (basic APC unit)
  • have unifi dream machine
  • poweredge powers down automatically if power goes out

What's the safest way to allow myself to power on the server in the event it shuts down while I'm not home?

I figure since I have remote access to my UDM, perhaps there's a command I can execute from there to power it on?

My fear is using a method that provides more than just poweron commands remotely. I want to keep the server attack vectors down.

Hey guys,

I'm planning on putting together an esp32 with esphome to receive the inputs of various reed sensors I have throughout my condo on doors and windows.

I've been doing lots of research and could use some guidance.

  1. How many GPIO pins are actually usable as reed sensor inputs on your typical esp32 board?
  2. I'm aware of expansion boards that connect via I2C to the esp32 and this allows for a max of around 128 sensor inputs. Would this route work with Esphome without too much headache?

I appreciate any input you might have (as long as I have a GPIO to spare).

Which one of those do you suggest over the other? GPT4 suggests LibreElec might run better on lower spec hardware like the Pi.

Can anybody lead me down the right path on this...?

I run a jellyfin server and I'd like to utilize a raspberry pi as the equivalent of a roku box / fire stick but for my jellyfin server.

I'm setting this up for a friend as a gift. He isn't very tech savvy so I wanted to make it user-friendly. I'm looking into buying a usb remote control as well.

I love the jellyin UI so it would be cool to stick with that.

What are my options? It would be ideal if the pi boots up right into the browser/player app and can be accessed/controlled via the remote like roku or similar.

My use case is I’m transferring large already encrypted files between two servers connected via wireguard.

Is there any benefit to SFTP over FTP in this case?

Jump to 4min in the video. Most valves I see that are automated are singular built-in units. I like that this contraption simply attaches to an existing ball valve.

Anybody know what product this is? Better yet...anybody know of a esp based product that's pre-assembled?
