Over a month after the previous 6.22 release, KDE announced the launch of Frameworks 6.23, expanding its collection of add-on libraries for Qt and enhancing functionality for developers across various platforms.

A major theme in this update is the expanded use of LeakSanitizer (LSAN) in continuous integration. Many frameworks, including KIO, KConfig, KTextEditor, Solid, Kirigami, KArchive, and KCodecs, now enable LSAN in CI to detect memory leaks earlier. At the same time, many individual leak fixes were made, especially in KTextEditor, KIO, KParts, KWidgetsAddons, and related test suites.

Baloo, KDE’s file indexing framework, received transaction handling refinements, cleanup improvements, memory management fixes, and logging updates. Several raw pointers were replaced with std::unique_ptr to reduce the risk of leaks and improve ownership clarity.

A malicious campaign of 30 Chrome extensions masquerading as AI assistants has infected over 300,000 users, stealing credentials, email content, and browsing data[^1]. The extensions, dubbed "AiFrame" by LayerX researchers, share common infrastructure under the domain tapnetic[.]pro and use iframes to load remote content rather than implementing actual AI functionality[^1].

Popular malicious extensions still available on the Chrome Web Store include:

  • AI Sidebar (70,000 users)
  • AI Assistant (60,000 users)
  • ChatGPT Translate (30,000 users)
  • AI GPT (20,000 users)

The extensions specifically target Gmail data through content scripts that extract email content, drafts, and thread text. They can also capture voice recordings using Web Speech API and transmit data to remote servers controlled by the operators[^1].

Ham radio operators may be familiar with slow-scan television (SSTV) where an image is sent out over the airwaves to be received, decoded, and displayed on a computer monitor by other radio operators. It’s a niche mode that isn’t as popular as modern digital modes like FT8, but it still has its proponents. SSTV isn’t only confined to the radio, though. [BLANCHARD Jordan] used this encoding method to store digital images on a cassette tape in a custom-built tape deck for future playback and viewing.

The self-contained device first uses an ESP32 and its associated camera module to take a picture, with a screen that shows the current view of the camera as the picture is being taken. In this way it’s fairly similar to any semi-modern digital camera. From there, though, it starts to diverge from a typical digital camera. The digital image is converted first to analog and then stored as audio on a standard cassette tape, which is included in the module in lieu of something like an SD card.

All of the hardware monitoring "HWMON" subsystem updates have been merged for the ongoing Linux 7.0 merge window.

When it comes to temperature / voltage / fan motherboard sensors, ASUS motherboards have typically found the most support under Linux thanks to the work of numerous developers. With Linux 7.0 there are several more ASUS desktop motherboards now seeing working sensor support under Linux. It's too bad more of this work isn't done punctually and directly by ASUS but at least for those interested in system sensor monitoring, ASUS motherboards both for AMD and Intel CPUs are typically the best bet compared to other brands. In Linux 7.0 is also another ASRock motherboard now seeing support.

As some long overdue housekeeping, the Linux 7.0 kernel has removed an Error Detection And Correction "EDAC" driver for the Intel 440BX and 440GX chipset. The driver is being removed not only because that chipset was just used by old Celerons and Pentium II / Pentium III CPUs but that it's been in the kernel all this time while being known to be broken for 19+ years.

The Intel 440BX chipset and the higher-end 440GX chipset were used for Slot 1 and Socket 370 P6-based CPUs from the late 90's. Long obsolete and incredibly unlikely anyone still having an old Pentium II / Pentium III are running modern Linux software stacks on them with the newest upstream kernel...

Systemd is a core part of most Linux distributions today, but managing services from the command line with systemctl can feel intimidating, especially for newer users. That’s where a promising new project caught my attention: systemd-manager-tui.

Sure, the name isn’t exactly short. I mean, the author probably could have come up with something snappier. But to be fair, it couldn’t be more descriptive. You instantly know what the tool is about. Still, even with a name that clear, it’s worth taking a closer look at what it actually offers.

systemd-manager-tui is a relatively new Rust-written tool that provides an interactive text user interface for managing systemd units directly from the terminal. However, instead of relying solely on systemctl and related commands, the tool communicates with systemd via D-Bus and presents services, timers, sockets, and other units through a structured interface.
