I think it's more that Electron apps can be written in javascript, and there are way more javascript developers than any other kind. So you're naturally going to see a lot more javascript software.

So it is, quite literally, a skill issue.

Anything "immutable"

  • ublue family: Bazzite, Aurora, Bluefin
  • Fedora Atomic family: Silverblue, Kinoite, ...
  • KDE Linux (experimental)
  • OpenSuse MicroOS (for servers, but possible to add a desktop)
  • SteamOS (limited hardware compat)

Any other answer is outdated and wrong.

Edit: holy shit the amount of mint recommendations is crazy. Stay away from mint, it sucks. It's just a less reliable version of Ubuntu. If all you like its desktop environment, that's called "Cinnamon", and it can be installed in other distros.

I disagree. Secretly recording someone with a phone is much easier than doing it with one of these. It's the same issue people had with Google Glass back in the day.

I think the reason it feels creepier is because, if you're talking with someone that's wearing them, it feels like they're sticking a camera in your face.

But like I could turn on my phone camera, leave it sticking out of my pocket, and record everyone taking a piss in a public restroom with nobody noticing. If I tried to do that with glasses, I'd have to turn my head towards everyone's cock, one at a time. The neck pain alone makes it not worth the effort.

But to be clear, fuck Meta. These glasses should be banned for many other reasons.

This is why nix is doomed to be a toy forever, because its user base consists of unhinged cheerleaders. Please do the following:

  1. Breathe in
  2. Count to 6
  3. Breathe out
  4. Count to 6
  5. Repeat until you stop seeing red

Now, re-read the linked blog post and my comments, and try to understand the problem.

Well, you're clearly very passionate about nix, but all you've shown is how to install git in an isolated shell, which again isn't what I was asking.

I don't have anything against nix, but it doesn't seem like the right solution to the particular problem that was presented.

Well, that's because they removed it after WW2. The original IBM keyboard had this, and other Nazi symbolism. (IBM collaborated with the Nazis, if you weren't aware)

Another fun fact: the Windows logo today is where the swastika used to be. If you look closely, you can see how the swastika's influence on Microsoft's iconic logo persists to this very day

Where is the closed source user space of Intel and AMD drivers?

They're not in user space, they're in the firmware of the GPUs. It's embedded in some chip somewhere on the card or in the motherboard. The open source components communicate with that closed part.

Nvidia previously implemented nearly everything in their nonfree kernel module driver. Today, they've pushed enough of the parts they're protective of into the firmware, so that they can release the kernel module as open source/GPL.

they use Mesa for the best possible compatibility.

Mesa is just the userspace implementation of higher level graphics APIs like OpenGL or Vulkan, which communicate with the underlying drivers. I actually think its a good thing the Nvidia has their own implementation of this as it creates competition, and they're positioned to improve consistency across windows/Linux since they likely reuse a lot of code on both platforms.

I've read comments by people bashing the recent Baldur’s Gate 3 Linux release and being full of graphics glitches. Then they list their hardware as proof how great it is and they all have NVidia GPUs.

That's Larian's fault for releasing a buggy port. They probably only tested on AMD because they only care about the Steam Deck on Linux. GPU drivers are always buggy, even on windows. The only way to ensure compatibility is to spend the time and effort to test on all of them.

Sure, you get an A for answering the question, but my point was that the hate they get today on Linux is misguided because people only have vague or non-specific complaints. The only specific instance of assholery that I know of is the one you pointed out, which is vintage at this point.

When Nvidia announced that they were going to move the proprietary parts of their driver into the GPU firmware, and open source the kernel module, there was a lot of hate about how they're being assholes for not releasing the whole thing as open source, relying on proprietary blobs, etc. Yet that's stupid, because it's literally the exact same thing AMD and Intel do for their much beloved drivers. Because of the vague and non specific criticisms, people feel inclined to draw negative conclusions like that.

I took your original reply further up to mean that Nvidia does deserve that kind of response today, even though they haven't done anything particularly evil in the Linux world lately (AFAIK)

The GBM controversy is the (only) one I know about. Afaik, their drivers support GBM today so it's kind of outdated.

These types of posts worry me because I can't tell how much of it is a joke, and how much of it is sincere. It's starting to feel like the healthy skepticism towards Valve that existed before is now mutating into Apple fanboy shit.

Valve is a monopolist. Maybe you happen to like them, but they're still a monopolist. They have a monopoly on PC gaming, and you're cheering for them to have a monopoly on smartphones? Maybe you think they'll be "better" monopolists than Apple or Google, but they're still fucking monopolists. Monopolization is the root cause of the enshittification epidemic, and a lot of the inequality and just obviously-broken shit in the economy. It's no coincidence the Trump admin is so eagerly supporting consolidation, and his FTC has stopped absolutely zero mergers.

This is the non-political version of the "leopards ate my face party" joke.

Actually got myself a job coding DS&Wii back in the day with my DS streaming tile engine

Damn that's sick. Landing a real job from homebrew work is the coolest backstory for a game developer. I've got a couple of hb projects I'm proud of, but in the world of Unity and Unreal I don't see it as being a particularly in-demand skill set.

...not that I'd want to work for a game dev company in 2025 lol
