LoL. There's a Google tech talk where the guys doing the autonomous driving DARPA challenge talk about how slow and awful military contractors are. Then they say "we just took off the shelf gps systems (you know, the ones the military contractors spent decades designing and building) and built something that works! Look how much faster the private sector is!"

That talk is 15 years old now.

We learned this from meta didn't we? A user is worth about $15 a month?

I mean, you could just use Firefox or safari, or anything not chromium really. Yeah Moz will take money from search revenue, but they've proven over and over google doesn't tell them what to do.

Heck, chrome exists because google tried to firce Moz to ship a shitty bookmarks implementation, and Mozilla said no years ago. It's literally just an example of a "I'm going to take my ball and go home" tantrum.

I'm always a bit shocked the worlds governments don't start offering free email/hosting to their citizens. It'd give them a cheap way to surveil that was "opt-in" (but would probably catch a lot of dumb people) and everyone would have a "verified" email for official stuff too. It seems like a good investment to me.

Israel is really in the drivers seat of this conflict though. You can imagine a reality where they had opened borders with Gaza and given them voices in the government. Where they're all these foreign funds for to build schools and libraries and pumping in tvs and video games and internet and helping keep the streets safe, and where it's much harder for a kid to say "I'm going to join a millitant groups" and where, even if Palestine is fighting it, we're moving towards peace. There's still violence from time to time, but it's declining.

You cant imagine the same story with Palestine. They have no power in the current relationship to give anything to Israel afaik. They can't build schools there even if they wanted to. So (to some extent, and acknowledging that it's horrible horrible horrible for the people involved) the lashing out isn't surprising there. It's not good, but also not surprising. The two atrocities are very very different (imo).

This is not true. There are hundreds of cultures around today who were conquered and just left to live until their conquerors eventually moved out. The Jews themselves have literally been conquered a dozen times.

But it won't kill hamas. It'll just breed more of them living in all the countries surrounding Israel.

I would guess that most republicans politicians are actually pretty highly educated. Trump even went to ivy league schools. They value it, just not for their voters.

It's the classic tech argument

"I use this because I care about y" "but it's worse at y?" "Y isnt really that important to me"

Hotstar disney+ is still $20 a year here in se Asia. Netflix starts at $5/month ($3 for mobile only). Im super curious if these prices ever hit us. I have a feeling they'd just kill the services if they did.

Lol. The privacy bits are what always make me doubt people who say they use iOS for privacy reasons. They'll scream that and then install every google service they can on the same phone.

Apple and Google have both done similar things. Osx will ask you to use safari if you install a different browser. Google shows "it's better in chrome!" on basically all of their properties if you're using non chromium based browsers. No one seems to really give a shit.
