@loudWaterEnjoyer @wren A lot of people have been asking about the skill toys and wren has already answered what they are for many times. I think wren's assuming that the person who said "all for a fidget toy" has already read the other messages and is just being disingenuous.

@Eheran There's a metal bar right behind the back that notches in, so the pressure goes there. The tape is just stopping it from sliding downwards. Thanks for pointing that out though.

(I sat in it for an hour)

Made a fix with my EDC duct tape

@edc

I came across this chair at my university that had its back falling off. It'll take a long time before it's properly fixed, or worse still, they'll toss it and replace the entire thing, so I wrapped some tape around and it's very solid now!

I have some duct tape folded around an old card in my wallet and used my victorinox knife to cut it.

@FlashZordon @tkk13909 Definitely check out CalyxOS. There's been a lot of drama between the graphene and calyx communities, but mostly attacks and misinformation from the graphene side. The Calyx foundation is really cool and they provide good support. Graphene *enhances* the android security model (this is useful perhaps but extreme for most people) while Calyx maintains it - most custom ROMs weaken the security model by not relocking the bootloader.

@tkk13909 @FlashZordon CalyxOS and other ROM user here, degoogled phones are awesome

The Victorinox swiss army knife is simply the best pocket tool! (Edit: no one tool is everyone's best)

@edc

The more I look at alternatives, the more I realize, nothing can give you this much functionality in this small a package, while being so high quality and reasonably priced. Popular (machine-assembled) versions regularly go for $25.

The one caveat is that it falls behind modern knives in terms of safety and ease for opening/closing. I'd love to see a next-gen SAK without nail nicks.

@cashews_best_nut @fujiwood If you do want a lighter like a zippo, make sure to get a butane insert, not the original zippo insert! The butane ones are easier to use and don't leak fuel.

Note that many of those new zippo inserts are made in China. Countycomm sells great "peanut lighters" which are small, circular (pill container style) and completely waterproof. They don't leak fuel either and are made in the USA.
Zippos are just such a great form factor for pocket carry

@edc btw, I realize this post might have a little advertising smell. but yeah obviously to be clear that's not the case. I just know it's a knife a lot of people appreciate, and would also be annoyed if people bought a Japanese knife made in China by companies that don't even have the right to use the name

Anyone else watch the new Ghibli movie and want the knife?

@edc

Studio Ghibli's new movie, The Boy and the Heron, prominently places quite a few traditional Japanese knives, including kitchen knives, a sword, and the boy's pocket knife, a Higonokami. They're a carbon steel friction folder. I just thought it was a vibe seeing it in the movie.

If you want to buy one, fuck Amazon and Chinese copies, go directly to the source!
Edit: higonokami-knife.com may be less legit than others. See comment

@Chev I point out in my posts that a phone, pocket computer, camera, dopamine rectangle, surveillance device, whatever you want to call it, is (a less important) part of my EDC, and I use it to take the photo.

I do actually carry a thumb drive!
Sure, the cloud works, but to me it's way less clunky to use a thumb drive than upload files over email and download stuff, creating digital clutter. It's also USB-C+A so I can transfer large files from my pocket computer to backpack computer if needed.

@xmunk @Sprite A dark pattern I DESPISE is the public WiFi at a local grocery store - after agreeing to the network's TOS you have to sign up for their newsletter to continue... unless you scroll down and click an un-highlighted button that says "no thanks, take me to wifi"

[-] finn1sher@mstdn.ca 2 points 1 year ago

@xmunk @Sprite If your design rules emphasize contrast, it would be poorer design to highlight both buttons and it's not in the colour palette to have a 'mild' highlighting like Windows used to have (I think some KDE desktop themes do this too) that suggests which button is the accept button, but doesn't give the other ones zero highlighting.

@fcSolar These are good additions to the existing constitution.

One thing I would like to add in terms of IP and Patent law is that you are free to reproduce Patented and otherwise protected physical items to any end, provided you make no profit in doing so.

This, coupled with 3D printing and future manufacturing tech, creates the foundation for a library/sharing/anarchic economy
