Map and navigation replacement: I used to use organic maps but changed to CoMaps.

I prefer CoMaps, you can download the individual maps, save them to your preferred location, and transfer them to other phones.

A family member uses Magic earth because they have E/os installed, and it is the default map and navigation app. they like it.

No ai for me sorry.

Which can only be a good thing.

All these weight loss drugs remind me of methadone.

I was a care coordinator and methadone dispenser for 15 years.

Methadone, was developed by the Nazi's in WW2 because the alies managed to prevent the importation of Morphine into Germany. The Nazi's had no choice but to developed the synthetic drug Methadone to replace Morphine on the battlefield.

When a person is addicted to heroin and wants to quit. He has two choices, a maintenance prescription or a reduction prescription.

The idea of the maintenance prescription is to maintain the addiction by giving the user enough methadone so he does not experience withdrawal symptom and can engage in life without constantly getting involved in crime and unsafe practices by using and buying heroin. If the user stops taking his methadone prescription he will have to start using heroin again to prevent withdrawal symptoms.

The idea of the reduction prescription, is to slowly reduce the amount of methadone down to zero, over a period of time, so the user can be clean and free of heroin.

Weight loss drugs are like a methadone maintenance prescription.

In that it may reduce the overall weight of the person for short period, but ultimately the person is still reliant on the weight loss drug to reach their goals. This is an addiction.

Addiction is a neuropsychological disorder characterized by a persistent and intense urge (to lose weight) to use a drug or engage in a behavior that produces natural reward (weight loss) despite substantial harm and other negative consequences.

Like heroin addicts stopping methadone and returning to heroin, those who are overweight will put on weigh as soon as the weight loss drug is stopped. So there is a great need to continue with the addictive drug.

Just like the cycle of change.

FOSS browser, FREE browser, Privacy browser and monocles browser are all pretty similar to me.

For basic browsing I am sure they are all OK.

monocles browser will switch to a custom WebView called Privacy Webview.

https://www.stoutner.com/privacy-browser-android/core-privacy-principles/

I use the monocles browser (rebranding of Privacy browser) for quick searches with javascript and cookies turned off as default.

For instance, if I am searching git for something and I see what I want, I enable javascript with the button, to see the latest releases and download sections.

I like the turn on javascript button. and the selection of EasyList , easy privacy, fanboys annoyances list, Ultra list and Ultra privacy list for adblocking and tracking.

From what I remember they all have the Delete browser data on exit. Monocles Browser makes it easier to "clear and exit" for me.

To clear, history, cookies etc. The "CLEAR AND EXIT" button is at the top of the left side drop down menu, so it is easier to find. unlike the others where it is at the bottom of the drop down menu.

I suppose its all about choice and personal preference.

Hey IanTwenty

Thank you

ext4 seems the way to go for me

[-] infjarchninja@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 months ago

Thank you SavvyWolf

This is particularly annoying when I have to upgrade my distro and all my files have to be moved to an external drive.

Unfortunately some of my files are up to 10Gb. thats why I stayed with exFAT.

I will certainly try Ext4 on my external drives.

Thank you Eugenia

Compressisng the files sounds a great idea.

I have in fact compressed a 12Gb file that I split into 10Gb chunks that still decompresses without problems.

This is particularly annoying when I have to upgrade my distro and all my files have to be moved to an external drive.

Unfortunately some of my files are up to 10Gb. thats why I stayed with exFAT.

I will certainly try Ext4 on my external drives. I will test it this week

Hey Truscape

Thank you for the wonderful thoughtful reply.

I particularly liked "the informed and the uninformed". This is true

Being a retired psychotherapist, I have known for all my professional life how easy it is to manipulate people. This is why, all practicing psychotherapists have to have, one hours supervision for every five hours of client work they do. This is to protect the clients from us, the therapist. There is no protection like that in the tech world.

My heart sinks everytime I see some shill promotimg online therapy. without ever understanding the lasting damage that they will do to the human being.

I do agree with all that you write

I have installed Lineage on all my families phones.

all with android 15

Oneplus 5T; still going string after 8 years use

motorola edge 20 128GB 8GB RAM; I had to buy it for £20, fluff in the charging port. fabulous phone.

motorola edge 20 pro 256GB 12GB RAM: My daily driver.

Samsing SM-T500 Tab: As an Ebook reader.

Android 11. no longer supported Samsung S4 with E/os: my alarm clock and stop watch for the kitchen.

There is a New samsung Heimdall firmware flasher called Heimdall-Grimler for installing custom roms on samsung phones. A much improved Heimdall.

I only use Heimdall-Grimler especially on linux where there is no Odin only Jodin3-bin which is a pain to use.

I only use Lineage and have done so for years without any problems since CyanogenMod 10.1.

Do remember that it is the choice of the developers to use google services and nothing to do with google.

When you say "Le Chat", do you mean Mistral AI assistant/chatbot? Its probably stopped working since GPT‑5.

Currently it is not possible to run "Le Chat" ai on a phone without google,

Again its the devopers choice. They could develop a non-google Le Chat.

who on earth needs a chatbot on a phone?

I have never have any problems finding open source alternative apps.

MAPS: Comaps, Organic Maps and MagicEarth, all provide Turn by Turn navigation

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turn-by-turn_navigation

I dont use any Banking Apps. Why do you need a banking app? I login to my bank in the comfort and safety of my home.

Lineage:

https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/

If you must use google try E/OS. It Uses MicroG and works very well.

microG is a FLOSS implementation of Google play services

I am sure it will creep back up once the MX 25 has been released with Debian 13 on 9th August.

https://mxlinux.org/blog/changes-coming-with-mx-25/

Optional distro downloads for Systemd or sysVinit.

use Mx-Linux on my old T450 laptop.

works great for my needs.
