hey furry toaster

Its very frustrating.

People are very odd when it comes to privacy and tech in general.

I have convinced half my friends to move from text messaging to signal and encrypted email but the other half totally refuse. Some have even changed to SimpleX chat and others to conversations.

I have explained to them how, just having my phone number in their contacts list, is hoovered up by all the other apps on their phones.

I tell them I use opencontacts because I respect their privacy, and that I do not share their phone numbers with any apps, so they should respect my privacy too. which they dont.

https://f-droid.org/en/packages/opencontacts.open.com.opencontacts/

I put my foot down and say that I refuse to contact them or reply to any message they send, unless it is encrypted.

I also tell them to delete my number from their phones because I will not reply to them if they use my phone number.

they still cling on to gmail and the old text messages and dont bother messaging me at all.

very odd people.

Hey ScoffingLizard

I am always the sceptic, but I have read that the monocles browser uses the monocles webview.

https://f-droid.org/en/packages/de.monocles.browser/

It says here: In the defaults, the monocles browser uses the monocles webview

here it is more in depth:

basically they are saying that unless you are using an up to date custom rom, currently android 15 on my lineage phone, there maybe security issues with webview

https://docs.monocles.eu/apps/browser.app/

Limitations and Known Issues#

Security Issues#

As monocles Browser is based upon the WebView component, it is dependant of the underlying Android ROM and it's updates.#

We thus recommend to use the latest available Version of Android for your device and - if necessary - upgrade to an aftermarket ROM like:

DivestOS

/e/

LineageOS

If a device has no modern firmware updates anymore and Aftermarket - Firmware is just not available, then please consider a different Browser like Fennec, which is privacy-enhanced version of Firefox for Android nee Firefox Mobile or Tor Browser which you can also get via F-Droid by adding or enabling the Guardian Project repository.

So, the UK, as one of the most wealthy countries in the world is ill equiped and doesn't have the resources or talent to make its own medicines.

The NHS is more privatised that we care to think.

An example:

I have just had an ENT (ear nose and throat) appointment at my local hospital because I cannot hear in my left ear

The waiting room wasn't packed solid, staff were friendly, there was calm and efficiency all around, Unlike other waiting rooms I have visited.

I had a scan, all was OK. its just old age.

I had a long chat with the ENT specialist.

He told me that the building I had my NHS appointment in, was in fact a private part of the hospital.

hidden within the grounds of an NHS hospital, hiding in plain sight with NHS signage, is a privatised hospital wing.

He told me about the extreme costs that the NHS has to pay because of having to use prefered approved providers (politically connected suppliers) for all its medical equipment.

He pointed at all the medical machines (monty python, machines that go ping) in the room and said that his brother, a specialist in private practice, has exactly the same medical devices in his Slovakian practice that cost him £5,000.

Whereas the NHS has to pay up to £100,000 for exactly the same devices, because they are unable to source cheaper suppliers. they have restrictive contracts that forbids them from buying cheaper and better products from another supplier.

He told me that this is what is drainig NHS coffers of money that should be going to patient care.

Another case of hidden politically driven VIP lanes draining the NHS of its funding.

Hey SteveTech

I dont use internal or external SSD's.

It maybe because I am an old greybeard, but I prefer to suffer the slight loss in speed of a HDD, so I can dd/erase/wipe them and reuse them again and again.

Though I have been using "disktest" to erase SSD's and HDD's recently and it has been working great. Much faster than zeroing with dd /dev/zero, shred or wipe.

https://crates.io/crates/disktest

https://github.com/mbuesch/disktest

However, I digress, I had not heard of f2fs before.

Ive been having an intersting read online.

It appears that it is a default for android phones.

I do have a few SSD's laying around from when I replace them with HDD's. So I will test f2fs on one of those.

Thank you
