Hi! I'm the developer of this project. I probably would have written up a little of what pinepods is and who it's for rather than a paste dump of the change log.

Pinepods is a podcast server that's self hosted. It aims to be a multi-client version of what you might already have on your phone that allows you to listen anywhere. Host pinepods and get a web client, mobile apps, desktop apps, even a CLI app. Your progress syncs between all these. It supports gpodder sync for use with your existing apps if you want (though I've put 100 plus hours into the mobile apps and really would appreciate people at least giving them a go) and it has tons of features. Think Notifications on release, smart playlists, multi user, sharing, chapter support, YouTube channel to podcast support. Loads of stuff, and loads more still to come.

With 0.8.0 the mobile apps are now on Google Play and the Apple app stores, and the api has been fully rewritten in rust. It's a lean mean podcasting machine. And actually the real current version is 0.8.1.

I appreciate the post OP but if you could, next time please add the above.

Hi all!

I've posted a couple times in the past about Pinepods. The ultimate self-hosted podcast server that syncs times between devices, archives, plays, and manages your podcasts.

I've just finished up the very first builds of the official Pinepods mobile apps for both Android and iOS and they are now in testing phases for both the Google Play Store and the App Store respectively. However, I'm at a small stop gap, and I need help from the selfhosted community. I need some people willing to sign up for the testing program and download the app in order to get them posted officially to the store fronts. You don't even really have to use it (though I would really appreciate it if you gave it a try as Pinepods has really made strides in becoming the best it can be as one of the most feature rich Podcast platforms around) I just need people to join the programs and install the apps in order to get on the app stores. Oh and yes, before you ask, Android Auto and CarPlay support are coming in the next update. Not here yet, but very soon.

I've done quite a bit of work to make sign ups for the beta program as easy as possible, you can simply do it here. Simply choose your platform of choice and you'll get an email with a link.

And as an aside, Pinepods 0.8.0 is days away from fully releasing and has had it's api FULLY rebuilt in rust. The entire app is now 100% rust and is blazingly fast because of it. If you do want to test out Pinepods, I would highly recommend pulling down the :nightly docker tag rather than latest for the time being. It's really close to bug free at this point.

I could say more about Pinepods itself but I'll let the site speak for itself, it got an overhaul in preparation for 0.8.0 and can really sell it. I've even just rolled out an official TUI based client called Firewood. I'm really trying to make the best self-hosted Podcast platform that does it all.

I get that comment often. I'll change the name if I have to. But it's a small open source project. My SEO results are already non-existent.

Exclusion filtering! What a great idea! You can quickly filter by keyword for episodes currently but you can't exclude certain words. I will get exclusion filtering added. The code is already in place for it!

Excellent point, I will include communication around Podcast 2.0 and all it's features in the future.

There's an offline mode on the clients to listen to downloaded episodes locally. That does not work on android just yet. That's part of what makes the android client beta. All the clients (including android) are built with Tauri, so they all build from the same code. It does however introduce some challenges when finding libraries that will compile to both desktop and mobile.

[-] madeofpendletonwool@lemmy.world 12 points 11 months ago

You can, on your local device. Pinepods syncs progress between devices instantly. I like to switch between laptop and phones. If you only listen on your phone and the app works for you that sounds like a great solution already.

[-] madeofpendletonwool@lemmy.world 9 points 11 months ago

Absolutely true. And if you only listen to podcasts on your phone that's a great solution. I like to switch between phone and laptop, and Pinepods syncs progress of everything on any client nearly instantaneously.

With the android App in Beta I'd continue using AntennaPods along with it. With Nextcloud/Gpodder sync or RSS feed exporting Pinepods is built to be great along with your current favorite apps. Not completely replace them. The goal is that it it could replace apps, but it doesn't have to. You should be able to listen however you want to.

Same reasons for any Self hosted projects. Own your data, Archive the content, I like Self-hosting. Pick your favorite reason. Podcasting is built to be an open platform. It deserves open and Self Managable clients.

It's a carryover from the original project. I did a complete rebuild of the frontend at one point to wasm due to rust having good frontend support with Yew. I plan to rebuild the backend too. All in due time.

I'm likely to rebuild the backend in Go, and while there will be a speed difference to a degree, the api isn't sending complicated data. The bottleneck in response times usually isn't what you'd make up for using a lower level language. Usually it's more likely query times and Frontend processing. The Frontend rebuild MASSIVELY sped things up. Which is why I started there.

And yeah, doc site needs a refresh. I spend too much of my Pinepods time programming.

Hey all,

For quite a long time now I've been working Pinepods. It’s a Rust based podcast management system that manages podcasts with multi-user support and relies on a central database with clients to connect to it. It’s complete with a browser based client where your podcasts and settings follow you from device to device due to everything being stored on your server. There's installable clients on just about every platform - now including a beta build of an Android client! (Also a flatpak, aur, Mac, windows, deb, appimage, and rpm client as well)

Over time this project has really grown into something great, and many quality of life features have been baked in. The experience of using Pinepods at this point is getting close to some of the larger self-hosted projects such as Immich, and as feature complete as a client such as AntenaPods. I can't believe that a project hasn't previously heavily focused on becoming a fully feature complete Self-hosted Podcast platform because of how rooted in the spirit of open source the podcast ecosystem is built to be.

So many nice to haves have been added at this point:

  • chapter support
  • sorting/filtering/searching throughout
  • RSS feed hosting for other apps to use
  • Great mobile support everywhere (PWA, beta android client)
  • Nextcloud/Gpodder sync support -Postgres or MariaDB
  • simple API's for things like Homepage Widgets!

And lately I've even been working on a feature that allows you to subscribe to hosts! This will let you follow them from show to show. I've built a side project called PodPeopleDB for that: https://www.pinepods.online/blog/2024/12/08/podpeople-db

Chances are, if there's a feature in a podcast app that's a must have for you, it's already built in, and if it isn't, I want to know about it so I can add it!

If you’re on the fence you can try it out without installing the server too! Check the website for more info!

Now is the perfect time to check it out and enjoy continued feature updates! Feel free to open issues or PRs if you experience any problems. Or drop a line on the discord. I’m happy to help!

In case you're unware. What is podcasting 2.0?

Ugh.. It is unfortunate isn't it.. Here's the history of the name.

I started development on Pinepods back when I was learning about python's fastapi. It originally was built in pure python. And as you can probably imagine the UI was dog slow because python isn't exactly fast. At that point it was called Pypods. Because python. I wanted to then change the name away from being a reference to a programming language. Only the nerdiest people would get that, plus I wanted it to have it's own identity instead of being tied to a language. So I went with Pinepods, which itself is a reference to the pine snake (kept the snake thing despite moving away from python) and at that point I started adopting the forest theme. Which is why if you visit try.pinepods.online you'll see rotating images of pine forests.

At this point, it's been over a year and I've invested somewhat in the tree/forest idea. I would struggle to move away from it because I love the forest undertones.

Changing the name is feasible. And might be a good idea. It kinda stinks I'd need to change the domains along with it but I suppose it is what is there. The challenge that I struggle with is coming up with something that keeps the forest theming. I really like that aspect of it.

Yes absolutely. If you're using Pinepods between the two devices your listen time is synced to the server. Meaning swapping between devices syncs your exact listen time. In addition to that I almost have time sync implemented for nextcloud sync as well. Meaning swapping between antennapod and pinepods your listen time will sync also.

Hey all,

I've spent the majority of the last year hammering away at Pinepods. It's a Rust based podcast management system that manages podcasts with multi-user support and relies on a central database with clients to connect to it. It's complete with a browser based client and your podcasts and settings follow you from device to device due to everything being stored on the server. AntennaPod is great and all but sometimes I want to listen to podcasts from my laptop. Here's a great solution to that problem. There's also a client edition that you can download and install.

Search both The Podcast Index or Itunes to browse through shows and episodes, Import or export opmls of your podcasts, utilize the standard of podcasting 2.0. It's all fully dockerized and you can have an instance of your own up and running in 5 mins!

If you're on the fence you can try it out without installing the server too! Check the website for more info!

There's a lot more to come down the pipeline as well, such as a lightweight client to stream episodes to and alternative database support. Now is the perfect time to check it out and enjoy continued feature updates! Feel free to open issues or PRs if you experience any problems. Or drop a line on the discord. I'm happy to help!

For the last 6 months or so I’ve been working on Pinepods. I have never been able to find the perfect self-hosted podcast app that I wanted to use. podgrab’s player is rather lackluster and misses a lot of features that I would like.

With Pinepods you can play, download, and keep track of podcasts you enjoy. It allows for searching new podcasts using The Podcast Index or Itunes and provides a modern looking UI to browse through shows and episodes. In addition, Pinepods provides simple user managment and can be used by multiple users at once using a browser or app version. Everything is saved into a Mysql database including user settings, podcasts and episodes. It’s fully self-hosted, and I provide an option to use a hosted API or you can also get one from the podcast API and use your own. There’s even many different themes to choose from! Everything is fully dockerized and I provide a simple guide found below explaining how to install Pinepods on your own system.

There’s also lots of modern features like MFA, self-service password resets, and some Podcast 2.0 functionality (more to come)

In addition to all that, I’ve built a client version of the app that can connect via API to your home server over something like a reverse proxy or tailscale.

Pinepods is currently a couple beta releases in with all the basic functionality implemented. Currently, you’re likely to experience issues, but I certainly invite pull requests or opening issues if you have the time. Even assistance with debugging/creating documentation would be unbelievably helpful. You can also get setup assistance on the discord server. I invite you to try it out!
