People who get heated over declarations that both sides are the same, take note. This is what we mean when we say this. The Democratic Party could not any more obviously be controlled opposition. This entire team is full of venture capitalists, wealthy people, wealth-backed people.

Both sides aren't the same. In the same sense that the good cop and the bad cop who come to interrogate me aren't the same. It's true the bad cop is going to knock me about a bit and scream at me, and the good cop is going to be nice to me. But they both work for the police. They both are trying to land me in jail. They're on the same side. They're just trying to get what they want out of me from two different angles. The one angle is direct, it does the heavy lifting. Why do you think the Republicans always get so much done when they're in power but when the Democrats hold majorities they don't get anything done? It's for the same reason that the good cop doesn't get me set free back onto the streets without a shred of new evidence out of me. It's unbelievable that people fall for the oldest trick in the book when it's so clearly presented. The people who think the Democratic Party aren't controlled opposition are like people who think the circus clown really didn't mean to slip on that banana peel and land on the whoopee cushion. It's a show, my god.

Big insult chains like that only hit home for me if each one adds a new dimension or sense to the insult. This is just saying stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid over and over again. Reminds me of le epic reddit insults like "fuckwaffle" or whatever the hell it was. I hate conservatives and fascism as much as anyone, but it's tiring to see such circlejerky posts that basically just say "conservatives dumb, upvote below". I don't need my opinion circlejerked, I'm already convinced of it without some random man telling me it's true. And there's nothing cathartic about reading this either because of how try-hard the insult sounds. Bleh.

Vertical video is better for content focused on a single standing performer, because it allows as much of the screen resolution as possible to show the body. Horizontal is better for a performer lying down or any traditional horizontal sex acts, for the same reason.

I'm probably reading a little too far into this, but IMO Gen Z is much less interested in "simulations" of intercourse and is more interested in something "real", i.e someone doing a dance. Intercourse feels like a fantasy, like you're supposed to imagine that you're the one having intercourse, it's that fantasy which is appealing. Something like dancing or dirty talking is more honest about what it is, since a video of someone dancing or talking is essentially the same experience as if they were actually there in front of you. I believe that because Gen Z is more digitally native than older generations, they see digital content not as a substitute or fantasy for a real thing, but rather as a real thing in itself, and the nature of the content they consume reflects that. Another example of this is the shift from real-life streamers who fake personalities but pretend that they are presenting their real selves, to vtubers - who implicitly acknowledge that they are playing a fictional character for their stream as symbolized by their avatars. The human streamers are a fantasy substitute for a real human friend, but with a vtuber the content does not pretend to be different than what it actually is - a pretend character putting on a show for your enjoyment. By acknowledging its artificiality and integrating it into the content itself, it shifts from being something "fake" and "simulated" to being something "real". To me it's the exact same dynamic manifesting in a different area.

Now of course, I do understand that vertical content also simply means you don't need to rotate your phone, and that Gen Z is almost exclusively using the Internet on the phone vs. the desktop as older generations will. But this too is essentially a reflection of the feeling that digital content is not an artificial recreation confined to a specific display area (a TV or computer) but rather perpetually available (your phone), as would be appropriate for something which has taken on the status of being real rather than fake. The two forces reinforce each other, imo.

I am not depressed, but I will never get a brain implant for any reason. The brain is the final frontier of privacy, it is the one place I am free. If that is taken away I am no longer truly autonomous, I am no longer truly myself.

I understand this is how older generations feel about lots of things, like smartphones, which I am writing this from, and I understand how stupid it sounds to say "but this is different!", but like... really. This is different. Whatever scale smartphones, drivers licenses, personalized ads, the internet, smart home speakers.... whatever scale all these things lie on in terms of "panopticon-ness", a brain implant is so exponentially further along that scale as to make all the others vanish to nothingness. You can't top a brain implant. A brain implant is a fundamentally unspeakable horror which would inevitably be used to subjugate entire peoples in a way so systematically flawless as to be almost irreversible.

This is how it starts. First it will be used for undeniable goods, curing depression, psychological ailments, anxiety, and so on. Next thing you know it'll be an optional way to pay your check at restaurants, file your taxes, read a recipe - convenience. Then it will be the main way to do those things, and then suddenly it will be the only way to do those things. And once you have no choice but to use a brain implant to function in society, you'll have no choice but to accept "thought analytics" being reported to your government and corporations. No benefit is worth a brain implant, don't even think about it (but luckily, I can't tell if you do).

Yeah this isn't newsworthy because she's rich, tbh there's probably richer immigrant students at Harvard we don't know about. But diplomatically this is a pretty big deal. This lady is gonna grow up to wield substantial political influence in her country, and she likely won't have warm feelings towards America as a result of this.

Yeah, some of that is the impromptu nature of this post. I've thought about moving to other countries since high school. I'm very interested in a lot of cultural things that are just vastly more prevalent and thriving in Europe. Sometimes it feels like I was born in the wrong place. So there are definitely places I'd love to run to. I visited Switzerland and it felt like heaven on Earth compared to my state. I wanted to move there long before Trump's first election. But it seems that particular country is near impossible to move to, plus Swiss German seems particularly tough.

I really like learning about other cultures and such, I'm afraid I may have come off entirely wrong in the brevity and laser-focus of my original post.

Very interesting that you say the working language would be English. That's fantastic news. I definitely think I can get to a basic conversational level with languages pretty quickly, but reaching the technical professional level is my big fear. So that's very encouraging to hear that it may not be so dire as that at least in the Netherlands. Thank you for taking the time to respond!

My German teacher had a fairly profound impact on my life, I knew him for four years and he was absolutely enamored with everything about Germany. Like the German equivalent of a weeb. Some of that has transferred to me, I like basically every aspect of German culture I'm familiar with, especially the sense of humor. Since I already have some language familiarity, it's always been near the top of my list, until recently with the AfD stuff giving me a bit of a fright. Although I saw they were recently classified as extremists, which was reassuring (thanks Lemmy for being such a good news source!)

It's of course too bad to hear about the rural racism, especially since I'd prefer a rural place of living, but it seems those two things always go together to some extent.

I'm certainly going to enroll in classes for whatever language corresponds to my target country. I really want to be an exemplary citizen of anywhere I go. I feel it's an honor to be accepted for a visa somewhere so I don't want to take that lightly. My biggest concern is just that I won't be that great with the target language despite my best efforts.

Yes, I've thought about this a lot and do make efforts to improve my environment. But it's disheartening, the vast majority of people in my community are extreme Trump supporters. I know people who threw parties to celebrate the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico. It's hard to know how to improve my community in light of that, and in fact it's hard to even want to.

But I am open to suggestions, what do you think are some of the best things I could do to improve my area?
