It's always fun to read people's justifications for brutal occupation.

I know, right? That quote led me to the brain-bleach-required section of Wikipedia. If you want to ruin a nice Friday too:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_ethnic_slurs

Although above that one, "goombah" can be (not always) used as a slur against Italians? Growing up with Super Mario, that is kinda funny but then also concerning. Like it's been hiding in plain sight.

Here's how to fix this[+]

Create $HOME/.config/user-dirs.dirs with

XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/downloads"

You may need to logout/in for things to reread this file.

The full list of keys is:

  • XDG_DESKTOP_DIR
  • XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR
  • XDG_TEMPLATES_DIR
  • XDG_PUBLICSHARE_DIR
  • XDG_DOCUMENTS_DIR
  • XDG_MUSIC_DIR
  • XDG_PICTURES_DIR
  • XDG_VIDEOS_DIR

+: Since this is Linux, this is a fix for many but not all cases.

If that counts then Vim is definitely ad-ware (soliciting ICCF donations).

RIP Bram. You'll be missed :(.

Did you ever see James May's OG Top Gear piece on Honda's hydrogen car? I think about it a lot. That alternatives to ICE cars is the way to save ICE cars for enthusiasts.

This would have been the accepted action a little over 10 years ago. I think we've learned and experienced a lot since then. Just because something is online doesn't make it harmless. Radicalization is a real threat. It's how we got MAGA, ISIS, etc. Their ideology accepts summary executions in the street.

I was indifferent to defederation before, I don't leap to trampling the speech of others, but interacting here has opened my eyes. There's no way they can stay. The popular cliche "If there's 9 guys and 1 nazi sitting a table, there's 10 nazis sitting at a table" fits here.

I agree and I'm sorry you've experienced that. Such shill accusations are reactionary, add to a toxic atmosphere, and contribute nothing to any conversation. In fact, I don't think comment removal is a sufficient tool: hot heads should be given 24 hour bans to cool off. My 2 cents though. I am neither admin nor moderator.

It was a bit tongue in cheek but since Win10, there's more "nervous laughter" in the room than there was before.

It's particularly upsetting because lemmy.ml is a major instance. IMO, moderation in this c/ is infrequent and underwhelming. I don't mean to hang the mods out to dry; it would take a big team to wade through this effluent and tame the trolls. The hostile "Here comes the Reddit refugees" and "OMG Tankie brigade" shit is just the easy stuff. A rule on lazy whataboutism would help the signal/noise ratio as well. This post is from RT, about Ukraine/Russia/Belarus but the biggest thread in here is rehashing the Iraq occupation. Can we just discuss the original topic? Is that so hard?

Hooooooold on, let me be crystal clear: I'm never buying an iPhone.

The point was that if the EU is going to go on an anti-bundling campaign, there's a long line ahead of MS Teams of more egregious behavior.

Last I checked, opening links in iOS with alternate browsers is very app-specific and requires a hack using a different protocol. E.g. Chrome registers itself as a handler for the "httpChrome" protocol and the app needs to do Open("httpChrome://lemmy.ml"). It's far worse than anything Microsoft did with IE back when they got sued.

Apple uses iMessage as a moat against people switching to Android. They intentionally degrade your experience for their benefit.
