Weren’t the trackers opt-in? This doesn’t seem like a bad thing if you don’t mind giving up those user metrics for them to build something better. It is the opt-out stuff with no transparency over the kind of data collected to be worried about.

Balisage Paper: Fat Markup: Trimming the Fat Markup Myth one calorie at a time

Old paper, but so are these specs which haven’t really changed. I know there are more formats than XML vs. JSON but they are two of the most common, and relevant to the battle of XMPP/XML vs. Matrix/JSON.

Micosoft also owns npm, Windows, Azure, Office, Outlook, Teams, & LinkedIn—MS GitHub is not just Copilot, but Sponsors & Codespaces. The whole overarching goal is to integrate all this data & make support between these products is prioritize with little upsells inside the apps, & get you hooked on the ecosystem… neo-EEE.

If they whine (pun not intended) make the moderators add a Linux category & proudly show off that you run games fast on a free OS.

So long as you don’t buy into a platform’s proprietary features, you should be able to easily migrate if the basis is on a open technology. For instance, if you are using Git as your VCS, you can rehost it elsewhere easily. If your chat is on IRC and Freenode goes down, it wasn’t difficult to move to another platform as communities did. If you buy into Discord, you’re SoL for porting data out or having an easy way to transition to I different room/server since you have to migrate to a different protocol. If you start relying on Microsoft GitHub’s Issues, Action, Sponsors, etc. then you will also feel equally as locked in even if the fundamental system, Git is trivial to migrate.

Do you remember CSON? CoffeeScript Object Notation was a cute way to make JSON readable before CoffeeScript kinda died.

My previous laptop got struck by lightning last month. Because I had a passphrase & not TPM for unlocking, I stripped the NVMe from the board, put it in an enclosure, entered the passphrase, & now I can access all my data for recovering from that situation. Had I tied it to TPM, I wouldn’t be able to recover my data (ZFS & Bcachefs only have one ‘slot’ for passphrases so no secondary, backup key)—while, as you pointed out, a thief can just boot the laptop they stole to get the data. Point being: passphrases offer advantages while being dead simple.

Doom Emacs is the Emacs users that found their operating system, but are trying to stumble their way into a good text editor :)

Ones with voice activation & stuff do this already. TVs will pull a lot of power when ‘off’ since they’re not off.
