Missing from the list: ASUS lost a lawsuit in the UK after lying about saying their unlock servers being down would come back up for Zenfones. While they have a headphone jack, offer good price/performance, & used to fall in the ‘small phone’ category, you can no longer unlock bootloaders with final statement being they won’t be allowing it going forward.

(I would contribute to the upstream, but I only use proprietary Microsoft GitHub when absolutely required—keep this in mind Privacy fam when setting up any unmirrored Git repository)

If it can’t run in a terminal, what is the point?

One of my longer-term goals is to integrate Mumble on XMPP (others have thought about this too) since its chat is pretty shit & needing accounts to join isn’t great but or two good foundational protocols.

XMPP is better for modularity which is why everything is at extension with means the foundations are simple & easy to implement where you can build something optimized & bespoke on it like Fornite’s coms or Nintendo’s presense. It’s a little harder to understand tho since out of the box you get almost nothing—but the big servers intended for chat like Prosody & ejabberd have sane defaults.

The centralization you are referring to seems more a client issue since the protocol & servers already ‘do the things’ but it sounds like you want a single ‘app’. For community building where you consider group calls less common, both Movim & Libervia offer more than Element (note the other Matrix clients are lacking feature parity) since they both can do integrated posts like forums—where Libervia supports calendars/events too. There’s no reason a client couldn’t exist with Jitsi or Mumble integration.

Ultimately use the right tool for you—it’s just nice to dispel myths that Matrix has some special sauce or that predecessors can’t fill the same roles (while also using less resources in all directions).

What does indexing have to do with actually getting to own your data & not participating in corporate-owned social media? If you want to straight hide it all, you would never post it to the internet. Most of us sought the refuge of Lemmy to avoid these platforms & know our post aren’t harvested to profit for a Lemmy IPO.

Recruiters can find you regardless, but also are not very useful for getting a job versus having a network & the cut they take means you get the shaft if hired thru them too. A platform like LinkedIn is drivel that will absolutely rot your mind so it should be an easy skip.

I suppose I would choose Darcs & Pijul for version control systems to bit into Git hegemony (& if you prefer Git hegemony, don’t use proprietary code forges).

Additionally just the general vibes of IRC & XMPP for battle-tested chat applications that are lightweight for clients & servers alike. These are the kinds of tools your next community should be built on if you want to minimize resource usage (data plans, storage capacity, battery, CPU churn).

The best languages about really embracing punctuation as you would in English is Prolog & Erlang with their periods, semicolons, & commas.

A lot of websites are optimized for reading at around 1024 pixel which means many sites just give you the void to look at on both sides of a centered site (worse in naïvely scaling up all UI to the max so widscreen monitors get billboard-sized text)—so you may as well have more vertical reading space. The other part has to deal with keeping the titles readable with several open as the Latin script is horizontal. Either the titles disappear & you are left with tolerate logo favicons like Chromium or like Fx where the tabs move to vertical scrolling which is difficult to parse quickly—there’s a reason why you write your grocery list with a newline as a separator than trying to cram it all on a single line. Given the current Fx implementations using the sidebar are kind of a hack, I for one am happy to see this finally being worked on.

Authy requires a phone number last I checked & is a part of a for-profit entity. TOTP management is a simple task so there is no reason not to be using something open source.

Proton brings HDR but will the client ever support 30-bit color or can we continue to expect crashes on startup for the foreseeable future?
